I'm having trouble figuring out how to reply to my previous post. The original question is below. The head is very hot. It you splash water on it, the water sizzles. If the pump is working properly shoudn't the engine run cooler?

1958 Evnirude Lark 35HP does not pump water---just spits and sprays. New impeller. Turns clockwise. New head gasket properly torqued:'(. Thermostat works, but also tested with the thermostat out. Water flows down from the thermastat through the lower unit, but nothing moves UP the tubes. Copper tubes in lower unit look fine.

Does anyone have any ideas?

You are correct, the motor should not be that hot. There is something amiss. Are you running it on a boat or in a bucket? It never was designed to run in a bucket. Did you replace the whole water pump or just the impeller? Pump housings wear too. Are all the parts in the thermostat housing...including the spring and check valve? There is a "freeze" plug just above the exhaust relief hose, with several small holes in the casting behind the plug. Water passes through those small holes. There have been cases where the holes have gotten plugged with trash. Remove the rectangular plate on the side of the gearcase and look for a crack in the casting behind it (no crack is allowed). There is a bleed hole in the water pump/water tube adapter. If plugged up, the water pump will be erratic. These suggestions should keep you busy for awhile.
