1958 Johnson 18 Hp Model Fde- Fdel -12 One Of Two

The Seal On Bottom Of The Crankshaft , Do These Cause Much Problem?

I Would Could Find Out If Going Bad? Are Dose The Motor Shown Any Signs?

It Have To Change It Dose The Crank Case Have To Come Apart Or Dose In Just Drop Out After You Remove The Retain Ring?

I See Sign Of Oil/ Fuel Run Out The Two Hole @ The Impeller , A Good Bit .
The Low Got Pressure Check , So Not The Lower .

I Break The Motor Down To Paint It, Since I Have Apart If Needs Seal I Go To Do It.

Let Know What Think On Matter , Thanks

If the lower seal starts to go you may see hard starting or the engine may appear to sneeze/miss due to loss of vacuum. Might only happened when warm. Might happen all the time.

Cool thank you
do have to take apart the two half of block to change the seal?

do do just remove the lock key wash and everything drops out the bottom?

I've never changed the bottom seal, just the top. Looking at the parts diagram it appears you have to remove a retaining ring and then the entire assembly should pop out.

I'm just looking at the parts diagram also and it looks like the seal might be pretty far in there and be tough to 'dig' out.

The seal itself is carbon and isn't friction fit so I don't think it should be too hard to pick out with a couple picks. Maybe someone who has actually replaced one can shed some light.

Unless it is broken or has fallen off, it isn't bad. Well, let me take that back--sometimes they rust to the shaft. The shaft has to be able to move up and down a bit while the seal stays in contact with the bearing, meaning the seal has to slide on the shaft. The whole assembly is on the exterior end of the crankshaft. Just remove the snap ring and it pulls right off. Be careful, it's fragile and easy to break.
