1958? Johnson 18hp

Ok guy's I need some help. A motor I purchased arrived today. It was advertised as a FD-11 1957 18hp johnson. but when I got it today the lower has an evinrude tag with a model # indicating it from a 1955 15hp. I'm trying to figure out what year the power head really is. Serial # on motor is 1750583 it's a johnson power head. I assume its a 1958 because of the hood color scheme. Person said it was a 57 when I asked about good color so I figured it was just swapped at some point but now I'm wondering about everything.

There should be a quarter size core plug on the power head. Is that the # off of the core plug or is it different ??

No, 1750583 is the number on the plug of the power head. The one could possibly be an " I "

That is a Johnson serial number from 1959.

Post some pictures and we can positively ID everything.

I can tell the lower is from a 1955 evinrude 15hp . Not sure what year or what horsepower the power head is even though shell says 18hp.

The lion's share of your motor is 1958 Johnson 18. I suspect it took a tumble off a tailgate at some point in the last 55 years and someone busted a shift handle and clamp bracket. Evinrude parts are generally the same, save for the color. I spy evinrude blue under the red on the clamp bracket with the tag, and the shift handle. Not uncommon. I've got one with seven donors, six different colors, and no matching numbers. I call it my Johnny Cash Cadillac.

+1. Looks like a Jonnyrude all the way. The cowl and motor are clearly a '58 FD model Johnson, but the transom clamp looks to be a blue e-rude part painted to match. No big whoop, they're all interchangeable. Assuming the motor has good compression, everything else is easy to fix. You'll have to decide if you want to stay with the two line system, or convert it to a modern, single-line system. Again, it's another DIY job that isn't very expensive.

Here's a parts catalog with exploded diagrams of your motor. All of the basic parts like carb kits, coils, points & condensers, etc... are standard and easy to find. In fact, you can get them all right here at iboats for about $20 each. It usually costs less than $100 to rebuild the carb, ignition and lower unit. Holler if you get stuck.
