1st post here. I just purchased a 1958 Johnson sea horse, 35hp. Model RDE-19C I believe. I got the motor and the original shift controls. The guy I bought it from is looking for the electric Starter cable for me. Says he has it, but has to find it. I bought it for a whole $15.00. Yes, that's typed correctly. The motor does turn over. Pull cord is a little stiff retracting so I will replace that eventualy. My main question is, what steps should I take to wake this thing up? To my understanding, it hasn't ran in many years, so I'm sure a carb rebuild is in order, new plugs and possibly wires. Fuel lines for sure. How do I compression check it? I have a compression gauge but I've always checked my motorcycles with the engine warm. What should the reading be? And, should I put any oil in the cylinders first?
