Your staining the marine plywood ? Any reason you didn’t go back with mahogany ?

You could always use Sepele. It much more affordable than genuine cuban mahogany, but it still looks amazing. It's my favorite type of wood for all my woodworking projects... Especially the quarter-sawn stuff because you get that beautiful ribbon striping.

You could also either buy veneer or resaw your own stuff and glue it to the marine plywood so you don't have the expense of solid mahogany. Just make sure you use a waterproof glue or epoxy.

Yeah I completely agree it would look hundreds better if I put the original mahogany back on. It was somewhere around $600 for the sheets of mahogany plus shipping. No one local had it, so I went with the next best thing. But in all honesty I think it'll look good.

Got first coat of stain on! Exciting.
Just need it to quit raining enough to keep cover off boat and get inside of hull clean!

It's not that hard or expensive to buy a 2x4 piece of Mahogany and cut strips and then contact cement them to the underlying plywood. It really looks great and costs less than $100 bucks. Here's a pic of how it's done, and looks.

or you could go for the look I like best, using spacer strips of white maple.

Looks amazing 'woodonglass'. I may just do that eventually.. As of now I'll stick with what I have. I virtually couldn't get mahogany plywood in my area @ 1/4", so I went with regular marine. I do now see the difference if the grain and how its going to look, but it is what it is.

It's not 1/4" plywood, it's 3/16" strips cut from a piece of 2x4 solid mahogany glued to 1/4" ACX plywood. But the plywood will work fine.

Hey Wood.. So when I go to lay the urethane down.. Do I pour some onto the wood then roll it out? Or apply straight from the roller?

at home depot they sell mahogany but its luan door skins only problem with it is you have to coat it several times and not sand until you do because the skin is very thin veneer , just figured id toss it out there

I have to follow this, I have a wood boat from the 60's, needs similar repairs. I like the striping on Woods boat, I may get to the restoration next year, when I get the Larson done.
mine was originally varnished down the sides, to the waterline, someone painted it white before my grandfather bought it. It has been in the family for 50 years now.
