Bill, I started the thread in E and J.
1963 40 HP Big Twin Troubles.
(with the period at the end)
I will figure out how to link them this week.

Linked...Copy and Paste to your Sig...

Damn Dave, sorry to hear bout the engine troubles...best consolation I can give is if it ran before, it will again...

Just don't let it get you down...one step at a time...be meticulous and always double check...like Willyclay said, it is usually the little things that get ya...

Looks like you already have a good starting point over there at the E&J forum...check it out...

Just a note...if you have run down your battery...DO NOT fast charge it...first, if it has caps on top to check the electrolyte, remove and refill...if possible with fresh electrolyte from the auto parts store, if not available, with distilled water...then put it on a slow charge, 2 AMPS Max, for about 2-4 hours...then check it with either a hydrometer, or a load tester at your local auto shop...

Best of Luck and I hope everything works out...
Gus

PS- anytime you need to link something...hover over it with your mouse, Right click, a menu will pop up, pick, Copy Shortcut, go to where you want to put the link, Right click the mouse again, Menu, click on Paste...

Coils? My guess is coils. No spark at the plugs is usually coils. They can work perfect and 5 mins late be dead as a door nail.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Thanks Woody, I will check the coils tomorrow with the multimeter. I am supposed to check the entire starting system for a person here called F_R.
GT1M, I took the fuel tank apart yesterday and cleaned all the fittings. Your Pick up tube was actually there. I was expecting a rubber hose and I had never seen one in there. When I pulled the fittings off the tank I found the tube brass/copper tube inside.
After I took the fittings off, I painted a fresh coat of red on the tank. I will get photos tomorrow.

Lastly thanks guys for your kind wishes. I am really lucky to belong to a group of people such as you guys.
Have a great afternoon all:D

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Gus, get ready to start jeering.:D
Because you are talking to a gen-u-ine idiot! Yep, I?m fresh off the turnip truck.
The whole thing was because:
A: Not enough Octane gas.
B: Leak around fuel filter
C: Grounded solenoid!
I got out there early this morning and took the battery to napa to be checked. The guy there is a friend of my family. He showed me the machine. Good Battery. Then he put in under a load with another machine. Good Battery. Then I went home and called my Boat friend and begged him to come pull my fat out of the fire. 5 minutes later the motor was started. As soon as I touched the charged battery to the positive lead, (and I had the mother of all sparks) we both new instantly what happed; we found the solenoid that I installed the other day was touching the side of the solenoid box and grounding out. I must have moved the cable when I was putting the face plate back on. Seth taught me how to remove the fuel pump and fix the leak.
I had a big leak between the quick connects for the fuel tank. I replaced the male connect on the motor and still leak. For now I ran a long fuel hose directly from the inlet to the tank by way of the bulb. It works for now. My friend said that guys with large tanks like mine and bigger boats usually ?hardwire the tanks in anyways, just it is harder to empty the fuel out of line and carb. He said it would need a scewdriver. I can live with that?. When I have a little extra money and time I might deal with it again.
C-ya guys.

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Great news! Glad it was something simple and you were able to get that beauty running. You haven't seen smoke until you run some 24:1 mix through it. Seriously, the full synthetic TCW-3 oil seems to reduce the amount of smoke even more. Thanks for measuring the fuel tank while you were focusing on the motor. I saw the 24inches long dimension but missed the H and W. Post them so we can estimate the tank capacity. That fuel line connector leak is puzzling since I understood you put new parts on both the hose and engine sides. It is possible that the old male fitting damaged the o-ring in the new hose fitting and that's why it leaks after you replaced the male fitting. BTDT.. There are gazillions of the OMC-style fittings in use that don't leak and both Yamaha and Mercury use a similar design. I never really liked them and changed mine to the old Chrysler style. I will post a picture later so you can see what I am talking about. FYI, the cylinder head is definitely a pre-1962 version with the compression release valves. However, the rest of the linkage is missing. Some PO did what he had to do to keep it running. Keep checking things off the list. I can hear the water calling you!

Consider yourself Jeered, and then hugely CHEERED!...Awesome, Outstanding, Excellent...what else can say! That is great news...OK, now, No more negative thoughts, only positive, happy thoughts...

Oh and BTW, 2 stroke engines always tend to be a lot amokier at idle and low RPM's, when they get wound up, the smoke usually goes away due to the higher combustion temps...
