I found a 1959 Johnson 35hp "Super Seahorse" with an electric starter and is in pretty good condition and the guy said his neigbor came over and started it. He wants $80 for it. Does that seem reasonable?

Hi Bill
The question is, does it seem reasonable to you?

Bill,

The engine is 44 years old.

Granted, it was a good engine, but I don't know if I would want to count on it day in and day out.

Might be fun to play with/restore.

Bill,
I have a 1958 35 hp Johnson Sea Horse and I love it. The parts are still readily available and as long as it has good compression and you take care of it , it will treat you right.I paid $200 for mine and have now restored it. Of course I bought mine because I was putting it on a 1958 Tru Ski boat that I restored and it looks original now with this motor on it.

Sounds like a very good deal....if you are a hobbyist with an antique boat and/or enjoy working on engines.

As noted above, parts and information are readily available. The question for you is whether you want to maintain an antique engine that won't have all the refinements of a newer model.
