Re: 1959? johnson superhorse 50

The puddle it left on the ground was milky oil(thick). It would drip for a day or two after I ran it.

The oil I drained out tonight (from the bottom plug) started out cream color and turned darker(like oil should look). So the oil sitting in the bottom of the gear housing was creamy and the oil that floated to the top was the darker.

Is there a seal between the water pump and the lower housing that could be letting water in the gear lube and gear lube back thru the water pump, and out those holes?

Well, of course there is the drive shaft seal, below the water pump, just like any other motor you probably have had apart. If you really are that convinced that it is gear oil, go ahead and drop the lower unit and take a look. But what is making the oil run uphill and out the seals, especially that much oil? Also, notice the oil is not running out the water bypass screen/plate, that is where drive shaft seal leakage would come out. I say it's fuel and that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Until you drop the unit and tell me I'm wrong, that is.

Thirty bucks for an o-ring??? Holy cow! Wish I knew what size it is.

Edit: There has to be some mistake there. Part number 305242 is 80 cents from a Johnson dealer. Sierra/iboats part number is 18-7118, probably around 50 cents??

Yes, the mistake was mine. It was $30 for the seal under the water pump. The shift rod seal was cheap.
