1960 Johnson 3hp
Mod# JW-16
SER# 2036847

Friend gave it to me. Light coat of rust in cylinders had froze the pistons. I got them out but broke one of the connecting rods:(. That rurnt my day. I've been skimming ebay for a parts motor but so far, no dice. Being a Johnson, would parts be available for one this old or do I need to keep looking, or, was this model not worth repairing? I like bringing things back to life but if this model's plagued with problems I'll find something else. Thoughts?

Its a great motor. Some would agrue its the best outboard ever built. However, you are in deep. I'd suggest using that one as a parts motors. Trying to find and buy just the parts you need could be a long and expensive process.

absolutely worth fixin.
i have a 3hp lightwin and it is a great motor.
i would not invest big $$ but check e-bay and craigslist for a parts motor.
there are alot of donor motors out there cheap.
if you are not in a rush check later in the season, parts motors are usually more frequent then.

Also, you have a huge supply of parts motors as they made the 3hp with minimal changes from about 1953 to 1967, in both Johnson and Evinrude flavors. The parts you need will be the same for the entire run...
