1960 40 hp johnson rds22

anyone know what year powerheads will work with this model . i bought a 40 hp powerhead owner said it was 1964 but no numbers on the welch plug by the thermostat like my old one. are thay somwhere else this one has a plug with a hump but no numbers.

Any of the 40 hp powerheads from 1960-69, plus the RDS-20 and RDS-21 35 hp powerheads from 1958 and 1959.<br /><br />There may be some others, as well. I think the 33hp powerheads will work as well.<br /><br />If the welch plug has been replaced, it won't have a number.

try for the later models if you can, Needle bearings were used in the engines from 64 onwards. with these, you can reduce your oil to 50:1

The Big-Twin engine was entirely needle bearing in 1957. They always were except for the wrist pin.

will a 1969 mounting gasket work and should i stay at 24-1

You can use 50:1 in that 64 powerhead. Myself, I'd go with 32:1, but that's just me.
