Re: 1960 Chris Craft sportsman restoration project

Guys, with no cabinet work today I worked on my Chris... I took most of the day to fit just the starboard chine plank. It just about got the best of me, but I managed to get it in...

Great work! You are truely a craftsman! My dad had a 65 Chris Craft Super Sport when I was a kid. He sold it in 1984 while I was away at college and bought a new Master Craft. He got tired of the maintance. I was so disappointed when I came home and it was gone. I always thought I would get that boat one day!

Slow day at work...so I turned it up a notch. I got the last two bottom planks fitted along with the port side chine and aft topside plank. That leaves just two planks to fit! I have work tomorrow, so I'll take a break...

Re: 1960 Chris Craft sportsman restoration project

Guys, I have an update...I have removed all the planking and have sealed it once. I found against the grain cracks in two planks that were resawn from one board. I didn't notice them until sealing them. I had to cut out a short section and refit pieces to both sides. Tomorrow I will seal a second time. This weekend I will assemble the bottom for the final time. I will share pics as this step unfolds. 54 tubes of 5200 and 2400 bronze screws...STAY TUNED!!

Re: 1960 Chris Craft sportsman restoration project

Guys, I have an update... With the help of a friend, I now have the bottom installed. It took 38 tubes of 5200 and about 1700 screws to complete. The planks are glued and screwed in place and lookin good. There has been something about getting to this point, having everything glued down, screwed off, soaked and covered with plastic that I have set as a goal. I achieved that goal today. I'm very excited about this ... I feel like I'm really gaining ground with this project. Can't wait to start sanding...
so glad to get those washers off the boat!

Re: 1960 Chris Craft sportsman restoration project

Guys, It's been a few long days, but I have reached a point of completion... I now have the bottom puttied, faired and sealed. I was important to get sealer on it as soon as possible. Now I can fit the lower topsides planks and move closer to bottom paint. I still have two thru hull holes and the drive shaft hole to drill...so many steps...Stay Tuned!!
