Yea, we had a very nice Fall, but it's coming to an end. Anyway, if you're willing to brave the 40s I'm sure you can take it for a ride this year. Good luck with the new rig.

Got a spark gap tool today and could not get much more than 30-40 1/1000s gap before i had not spark on top cyclinder lead, nothing on the bottom. Pulled the flywheel, and this is what I got; one coil cracked real bad, one replaced at some point.

Could have guessed it, right? I think I will go ahead and just replace it all; both coils, condensors, points, and cables to the plugs. The newer coil must be weak since I could not get it to even jump a 1/8 gap. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long for parts, and useable days for an in-water test are limited this time of year in MN. Current temp is 36F degrees.

I would just replace the one bad coil. The newer one should have many years left in it. As long as the insulation is in top notch condition, then you're good. The reason why your spark is weak, is likely because the ends of the spark plug lead are in need of trimming. Some people who replace coils, don't do a professional job and the spark plug lead is still rusty when they shove a new coil, in place of a bad one. It looks like a perfect before and after picture. :D

I got the parts today. New coils were < $15 so I got two. I got new wires, clips and boots to. I'd just as soon do it once and then let it be good for another 20+ years of service.

Question for those that have done this before,,, When setting the points, is it easier to put a stack of wahers on the cam and the nut back on the crank shaft, or just assemble it and set the points through the insepction window on the flywheel?

I set them with the nut on the crank, sans washers.

Keep the newer coil as a back up. It's still almost new. Fifteen bucks for coils is cheap. How did you pull that one off?

First, very inexpensive parts from O'Rielly's. Sierra brand stuff.

Took only about 45 min this AM to dis-assemble and put back together. Only mistake I made was not knowing where the felt oiler went, since the orginals were long since gone. Simple those, just lifted the one coil off again to set it in place.

Take a look at the hole burnt in the bottom of the old coil!

And I don't care if it dropped below 30 today and we are getting the first snow of the season (expecting 6-9 inches today), we took her our for a spin!

No problems with power now. Gets right up on plane. After a quick run, I had two other good sized adults hop on board, and we were still able to plane out nice. So... back to the heated garage for the winter where I can repaint the motor, fix up the hood, etc.

Thanks to all for your comments and ideas. Much appreciated!

There is something. Notice the last picture, no shift cable! So, a PO must have broke the standoff that holds the head of the cable. It had a poor patch from a piect of strap steel and some glue holding it together.
Options
1) find a replacement. anyone have one? ideas where to buy one? looks like job, it runs under the pan under the engine.
2) get a solid steel plate about 3/16 or better and make a new patch plus exend a bolt into the pan for stiffen it up.

This must has happened to someone else, looking for ideas how others have repaired this problem. I'm not looking to make a "collector" out of this, just clean, neat and functional.

Sweet ! Glad you got that test drive in before winter set in. I didn't know Oreillys carry's marine parts. Good to know.
Yea, I spent about an hour clearing the driveway today. Heavy wet stuff!

edit: Sorry, I missed your last post. Can't help you there. I would place an ad on craigslist. Twincities outboards will have it for sure, but will cost you $$.

Re: 1961 Envirude 10hp no power

Looking for a remote shift bracket for my 10hp 10020. I don't see the part on any of the exploded view drawings. Perhaps remote shift was an option sold seperately. Anyway, its that little arm that mount to the belly of the engine pan in the front and come up the starboard side of the engine towards the front to hold the shift cable.

Any leads on where to find one would be appreciated.

I loved your last pic, but where's the cowl??:D

You have everything you need on your motor to mount remote shift. The little silver thingy is where the cable body end slides into, with the actual cable attaching to the shifter itself though the little hole in the shifter.
Good ol' evinrude!:)

Re: 1961 Envirude 10hp no power

Funny you should ask mdgpl, I just replaced the points on my '61 johnson and stumbled across what a PITA it can be to keep the little spring loaded cam down to set the points. I just held it down with a screw driver while I adjusted the points, which was a pain, but I heard a much better way to do it if you want to adjust the points with the flywheel off.
Someone in the foums ( F R, I beleive, he knows everything ) said that he uses a length of stiff tubing/pvc/piping and slips it down over the crank shant, then he puts the flywheel nut back on and tightens it down until the little, spring loaded cam is fully seated. That way he has both hands free and never has to worry about the cam popping up, or something. I wish I'd heard about that first. 6" of pvc would've saved me a lot of hassle and you can use it over and over. Good luck.

Re: 1961 Envirude 10hp no power

jbjennings - the cowl is in the garage. I'm missing some hardware for the latch but I have it. Should have it back on soon. It "looks" like the arm is there to hold the shift cable, but it cracked and someone screwed a poor patch into it.

JBF 1962 - it was cold that day. Had a 1/2 of ice on the windshield by the time we got it back on the trailer. Still, very fun and nice to know that the new ignition parts fixed the issues.

kfa4303 - I thought about a stack of washers, but just did the hold-down with fingers. Runs great so I guess I got it close enough.
