I have a 1960 rude 40 lark 2 that needs new coils. i don't know how to check the points or condenser.but one set of points opened more than the other. The mag was rubbing the coils and there cracked so i know their no good. everything was wet when i pulled off the fly wheel, coils, condenser's etc. i sprayed wd-40 on the crank when pulling the fly wheel. But i think the seal is gone in the crank. if i clean it all up and put it back together and just pull the motor over will she build up enought compression to blow oil out around the seal again or is there an easier way to see if the seal is no good. and where can i get these parts if i need them, coils , seals etc. i live in canada and i can't find a place in canada to buy parts on the web.

If the flywheel was striking the coils, you will want to check the play in the bushing of the mag. plate. It takes a special puller, and driver to replace the upper crank seal. Don't try to just pry the seal out. I have seen several block's with the mag plate bushing guide broken trying this method.

is the mag plate what the coils are screwed to. if so there was a bit of play in it.

i don't know much about outboard motors but i heard that with evinrude and johnson you could exchange parts. if so what johnson motor would have more parts for my evinrude 40hp lark 2 1960. model #35520, serial# 50557.

Yes! the mag plate is what the coil's are attached to. The part's between the Evinrude, and Johnson are interchangable up to a certain extent.

jblake - if the armature plate (mag plate) is loose, try out Joe Reeves tightening method. Click here to see it.
I've ordered parts from the 'States in the past. My local dealer wanted $40CDN an ignition coil. Iboats sells them here (pn 18-5181) for ~$16US. Even with shipping, boarder charges and currency exchange, it was much cheaper.

Check to make sure the upper bearing is shot. You should not be able to move the top of the crankshaft laterally - would also explain the banged up coils (if the flywheel had moved enough to hit them) and the oil all over everything (with the crank moving in the seal).
- Scott
