Can anybody out there help a guy in fog-bound, drizzling London shivering in the cold on The Thames with no power?!

My old Evinrude 9.5hp Sport Twin is only firing on one cylinder and I strongly suspect the coil or the leads to the plugs are shorting out on the housing. I can hear a ticking sound above the engine noise that would indicate this. I've removed the flywheel but I can't see anything obvious.

Is this something anyone else has experienced? Is it a common problem in these engines? Does anyone know where it may be shorting out?

Also does anyone know where I can get coils for this engine in London or the UK?

Questions, questions!

Hi bongoman
You will have to inspect the intire ignition for shorts. You should be able to find a burned spot on the stator plate where the leak occurs. If the wires are not rubbed bare, then I would suspect a leaking coil. Sometimes you have to remove them and look at the bottom of the coil. Could be just a pin hole or a crack. Anyway replace it.

Thanks Alcan, I appreciate you taking the time out to help.

I think I'm gonna have to replace the whole ignition mechanism...but you would not believe the prices of spares over here. It may be cheaper to just buy a new engine but I hate to abandon this one.

Howdy, Bongoman.

First: Run your engine with the bonnet off, preferrably in the dark. If the problem still occurs look for arcing from the spark plug wire or on the spark plug along the insulator.

Often the bonnet will press a spark plug lead onto a grounded part and precipitate arcing.

Next: replace the spark plug wires and try again.

Good luck. :)

Thanks guys.

I couldn't find any scorching on the Stator plate and can't see any arcing. I think replacing the coils with 9.9hp versions is probably my next move. I've got to find them first though!

Try e-bay, the coils for the 9.5 are frequently listed there.
