Hey Jim, what's with the early Xmas presents, you know your supposed to wait to open them.:D Merc looks real clean, hard to tell from the pic but is the crack just below the the anti cavitation plate on the rear side? Winter is coming your way, got up this morning to 4 inches of heavy wet snow?

Exactly... the crack is just below the anti-cav plate.... roughly about an inch long at this point.

YIKES! --- its warm here all week --- pushing 70F tomorrow!! Ahhhh.... you can keep the wet snow if you don't mind! Not ready here yet --- still have about 100 bags of leaves to rake up!!!! :)

Does this mean I have to buy a Falcon and a Jet to go with my Jupiter?
I thought about buying this '69 Starcraft Falcon back in April. It sold for $125.

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild

One of these days I will get back to work on my '66 Jupiter. The new transom & floor have been sitting in an upstairs bedroom for months along with the windshield & new seats. I just need to paint the bottom and then reassemble. It won't look as good as your Jupiter but its the best I can do.
I did get another trailer for it a couple weeks ago. The '66 Gator is in great condition but since I'm planning on bringing the boat along on my vacation to Lake Powell next year (2200 miles one way) I figured it would ride better on a heavier trailer.

Is that a mid 1940's IH Cub in that photo I see??? Those are nice, 19 hp low compression engines, tough as nails, awesome tractor.

Yep, you should of bought the Falcon, $125 is cheap, That's my kinda deal.

Thanks, the trailer cost me $250. I still have to adjust the bunks and finish installing the winch post. I had to use a winch post from a trailer that I scrapped since the existing winch post set up will not work with the Jupiter. The trailer was made for a '86 ProCraft bass boat and the previous owner had just installed new LED's all around. Trailer also has a built in transom saver.

Sometimes I get a wee bit confused as to which thread to post in!... but this is I believe where this should go... :)

So here is a pic of the doner motor and the new motor work table. Made a new a motor stand out of some left over wood.

Also have 1 last project to complete for the Admiral before really getting into the boat build --- the Jet that is!!!

Just need to assemble the door pieces and attach to the unit, a final sand and urethane and it's complete

My buddy has a '68 20 hp Merc that's got a crack in the same spot. It was his FIL's motor. Had some water in there and froze one winter. He JB welded it up a couple decades ago and it's still holding!

Hey BD --- Thanks for the info... good to hear that someone else out there has been able to fix it. It's a pretty good split now in my case... wonder... did your buddy's FIL JB it from the inside??

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

^^^ He JB'd it from the outside. He didn't take it flush either kind of left it a little proud but feathered it in. If you look right at it you can tell, doesn't look too bad though. It's held up for a lot of years! The Mercs were prone to lower unit failure in the 60's. They had the swept back lowers for styling and water-dynamics. If they leaked a little and then froze, pop! I guess that's why you change your lower lube before winter.

I really like the Falcon. I can see me trading in the Sea Nymph for one when we need another project. Can't wait to see your paint scheme on this one.

Thanks for the infor Don. We'll see which way I end up going --- replacing the LU or tying to fix it up.

I like the Falcon as well.... got some big plans for this one.... just got a Jet in dry dock to get out of the way first!! :)

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... good news... found a rebuilt LU for the Merc... not the cheapest ($325 all in)... but it will do the job. The problem I understand from these old motor's was that the shaft's rust and then water get's in the crank case and over the winter POP! I always change the LU oil and keep the motor tilted all the way down so that any water/snow will not accumulate in the prop etc. Haven't had an old motor for a loooong time.... so we shall see how it goes!

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... just had a 45 minute conversation at lunch here with a guy named Ted who is in my opinion a old merc guru! Turns out my motor is 1966 model as it was the only year to have a square sticker with flames shooting out of the lower unit/prop on the side of the motor.

Good news is that where the crack is, is in the exhaust cavity of the motor --- not where the lower end oil is! So, he said I just need to get it welded up and I will be good to go. He also said it was caused by someone backing the motor into something --- either out of water or in water! I am quite excited about this now --- the LU can be saved and off we go...

We even chatted about the other motor and it turns out that despite having a 1969 band and face plate on it, the motor is actually a 1965 (he asked a bunch of questions --- but the distributor assembly was the give away that it was a 65'

Good news is that if I need parts beyond what I have, he has tons, and can help troubleshoot issues anytime!

Just thought I'd share the good news..

Jim
