I have 2 1965 33 HP Evinrude's (which are pretty much the same as a Johnson) and they are very strong running motors. I gave $500 for each (which I think is a steal).....SO, I would offer the guy (if they run) about $400, or $450 and see what he says. If they will turn over but dont start, and they have been sitting a while, I would still consider buying it becasue it could probably use a carb rebuild (that's what I had to do with mine!) I hope this helps you with your decision!
Check compression before buying. If compression is good, most everything else can be renewed. I'd still only pay $200-300 for it. By the way, they didn't make a 35hp in 1961 - probably a 40hp.

35hp was made in 1957-59, and not again till 1976. Those guys are a lot more generous than I am. But I'm a cheapskate. Even if truly only used one or two seasons you can figure on spending $150 on parts to get it ready to run. Does it come with the junction box and all the cables, and a CLEAN gas tank and hose? That stuff is part of the motor and you are not getting a complete motor if it is missing.
I agree. I think that's too much. I'd make a lot if I could sell 35's for that! And you will need all the accessories that FR listed. They add up. Is it a metal (red & white = '57 or '58) or fibreglass (white = '59) cover? From '60 and on it was a 40hp.
And are you trying to say it's only been used 1 or 2 years in the last 50 years? That seems pretty rare?
And up here, 40's are a dime a dozen. I have several in my shed. You can get a running one for under $200 pretty much any day you look for one...
