I just bought a project boat (my first boat), came with 1961 40HP Evinrude that I have not started yet. Tried to start it tonight by jumping it with my car and it would not turn over hard enough to start, the only signs I saw was some smoke coming from the starter.... I am very new to engines and plan to look over the manual tomorrow but wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction? The flywheel was moving and trying to go but it was weak, tried my car and then a truck with thick jumper cables and revving it trying to give it some power but just wouldn't do much except the flywheel spinning a little each time

Be on the lookout for a new or rebuilt starter. The smoke got out of that one.

EDIT: That's an old saying, meaning it burned up.

Get the starter bench tested and clean / replace all cables and connections.

Had that problem w/ my 90 HP Force. Disassembled starter and added grease to bushings. It works fine now. As said the starter needs to be bench tested since it was smoking.

I cleaned and oiled the starter, tried to start it again and i think it was spinning the flywheel harder... then got a backfire type sound from the front top port... going to lookup what that port is i assume the exhaust port, still didn't want to start though, i am also getting gas leaking from the carb is that bad??

You need 300 rpm + to start the motor.

Remove the spark plugs and see if the engine turns over properly. Has the engine been setting for a long period of time? Maybe try squirting some oil in the cylinder and turn over by hand to spread the oil around and seeif turns over easier.

Gas leaking from the carbs is a sure sign that the carbs need rebuilding.
A manual is your best investment.

Agree. Carb rebuild would be a good idea.
