Should I see water coming out the exhaust?

I thought so. I have had the lower unit apart and replaced the o-rings in the water tubes. I inspected the water pump impeller last year and it seems ok. Read that this water pump won't self prime. Should I use a taller bucket of water to start it. Currently, my water bucket is filled just above the intake.

The water pump IS NOT self priming. Think about where the water level is on that engine when you start it in the water.

The water must be roughly 4 or 5 inches above where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing.... ABOVE the water pump.

Use a large plastic trash can.

Thank you for the replies. I have the unit apart again and am ordering a new impeller, wear plate all the seals etc.

I have power tilt and I have it raised all the way up. I now is locked in the up position and won't go back down. Is there a lever somewhere to release the trim in up position? I have disconnected the steering, shift, and throttle cables from the engine. It feels like it's mechanically locked.

There is no mechanical lock on those engines when tilted up, just a brace that swings out from the transom. There is a release screw on the pump housing

I saw the screw on the pump it turned 1/4 turn but it's still locked up. Did I raise it up too far?

No, the unit is designed to raise it as far until it the stops or the lift cylinder is fully extended. Does the lift motor run when you try to lower it?

I hope you got the tilt issue resolved. But with all due respect to Joe, that should not shoot water like a fire hose. That is a thermostat controlled recirculating cooling system. Amount of water discharged is related to thermostat position, which relates to amount of water being recirculated. Amount discharged out the exhaust relief varies from a bit ob a mist to a heavy spray. The 'stat constantly samples the water temperature and opens and closes as necessary to maintain proper temp.

My experience running a '61 40 Lark in a barrel -- heavy spray after the t.stat opened, accompanied by a change in exhaust resonance. The auto choke also opened up at about that point. At my age expectations for spray quantity are pretty low , but I know the Evinrude soaked the driveway pretty good.
