I am a first time owner of a 1962 18' Starcraft. This is my first boat restoration project. I am wondering if anyone can help me find out what the model name is? I've done google searches and looked on here, but I can't seem to find my boat. I will post pictures when I can take the tarp off when the rain stops. Anyone else out there ever restored an 18' 1962 Starcraft? Any hints or tips? How about buying a nice cover for it? Any suggestions? Much appreciated. Thank you!

It's aluminum. I've been looking on Fiberclassics.com (thanks WoodOnGlass) and it appears that Starcraft didn't produce any boats in 1962??? I bought this from an older gentleman (80+) down the street. I am starting to think it might be a 1961 Jupiter. It has been sitting outside for at least 6 years...that I know of. It has a 50hp 1973 Johnson (that I haven't tested yet) but he did say it runs. He also told me the trailer folds in half? I've never heard of that before. I am very new to all of this, and VERY excited to get working on it. I am planning on gutting the entire thing and power washing the exterior to get it down to the bare metal.

Welcome. You will be surprised how quickly your SC gets identified after you post pics. Re the folding trailer. It is probably hinged near the middle to allow for easier launching in the absence of a ramp. It lets the stern of the boat lower into the water and float. Mine has it but I have never used it. Be sure the locking mechanism is working well and check it often. Good luck as you proceed.

Thank you very much for identifying it. Today I started gutting it. I pretty much just need to take out the metal seat bases, the flooring and the back storage cabinet.

Here are the pictures from today:

I am pretty excited to get going on this. Yesterday I had the "why did I buy this thing" moment. Today I am ready for the work. AND knowing that it is a good boat to restore, that makes me feel even better about it. I'll keep posting pictures as I work on it. Thanks again!

Welcome to the Starcraft fleet bckress, that's a nice old Holiday there, I think starcrafter65 is right.:)

BTW it says that it's rated for 25-100hp, I'd say you could go up to 120 easily since that rating is so old. They probably did not make any motors putting out over 100hp in '62 so went with that as a benchmark for that reason.

They are nice boats, and at 18'6" and high sides plenty of room to work with. Good luck to ya:D

One more thing I forgot to ask. What did you use (or recommend) for a shift box?

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum BC, that is a really cool old Holiday you've got there.

If you go to teleflex's website they have instructions on how to measure for the proper length steering cable, ya want it pretty close cause there isnt alot of give to the cable and you want to keep the bends of the cable to a minimum. I converted my Falcon over from the old pulley system last year and it was pretty easy to do. The only other thing to consider is how it links up to the motor. If you're going to use a more modern motor its simple, some of the older ones get a little tricky but we can walk ya through what you need. If you look at my Falcon project in my siggy you can see my setup I did for an older motor.

The windshield might be a challenge. If its not all cracked up Ive read others having some sucess using a polish that can help clean them up, someone else may have to chime in regarding that, I dont recall the product.

The control box will be specific to what brand motor/year you go with. That 50 you have will move it around but might be a little underpowered. You should be able to find a control box for it or any other motor without a problem. I know that Johnny/Rude used the same controlers for many year spans so looking on eBay or if you have any local marine repair places around might have what ya need laying around.

Bk- Do yourself a favor and find and old marina or boat yard or ebay and look for scavenge parts off of old glassers. My boat has old steering, motor, outdrive, gauges, from donor boats - you'll save a ton of money. Your winshield will come back to life with a $5 bottleof restorer.

What did you do for steering? I found this:

http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/...e-9-ft-to-20-ft-with-STEERING-WHEEL_p_19.html

Would this work for this boat?

Yes that should work. Your '73 Johnson should have a tilt-tube (my '73 did). And it should hook right up. The only part you may be missing is the "steering link bar" which you can pick up easily on ebay. Here's how it should look when all hooked up http://www.inkbox.net/whaler/parts/steering-arm.jpg

Here's all the Starcraft resto projects http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=385090
Here's one identical to your boat: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=364883

(I just learned how to use the "reply with quotes") Thanks, there are plenty of marinas around here, so I'll start asking around. Good to know about the windshield. I will look for that around here. I appreciate any help and advice you guys can give me. Thanks again! -Brad
