I recently started working on an old merc and it isn't giving me any spark. Now I was able to get a plug to spark once but it hasn't sparked since, at least I think that may indicate the points, coils, and condensers are working. I have noticed the throttle knob is messed up, the knob will turn but the gears and arms don't turn consistently meaning if it's in the idle position it's probably not idle, I don't know what it is. So I'm turning to you guys for ideas on what to do about this. thanks - cj

Step #1 is a compression test.----Then remove flywheel to clean and set the breaker points.---Replace water pump impeller BEFORE putting motor on a boat.

thanks, I'll look into that I've cleaned the points already, and one point does look like it contacts with another so I'll gap that.

took another look at the points, noticed they were way off, and readjusted them properly. I then used a multimeter in the spark plug hole to test some voltage and noticed the bottom spark plug could read at 40V but the top never broke 1V. either way, I still had no spark on either plug. right now I'm thinking the top plug may have a bad condenser, and the magneto may also be set wrong however I have no idea how to adjust that. I have noticed the shifting knob's gears are not responding correctly or consistently which seems to cause random turning, like putting it in the start position is not actually start.

She's alive. replaced both condensers, they wouldn't fit so I had to get creative but I got spark on the bottom plug and that's all I needed to see if she'd fire, and well after a few minutes she did. the next step is replacing the coil for the top plug, getting the right condensers, and cleaning the carb. also, is it normal for the carb to squirt gas out the back and from a small hole on the side? oh yeah and the impeller. that'd probably be a good idea.
