Hey guys I have a few questions about this old merc. The motor was given to me and I would really like to get it running. I have done a carb kit right away and the pump seems to be good. Compression is good at 85psi each. New plugs installed and I have an impellar kit on the way.

My problem is I have good spark on the bottom cylinder but #1 is dead. Should I go ahead and install a points and condenser or is the plug wire more likely the culprit? Im not very familiar with these points systems. I was under the assumption that if the points were bad I would have no spark at all?

BTW serial number is 1527291

Just so you know these motors are well engineered and it has a duel ignition system-----------2 sets of points / 2 condensers / 2 coils.--------So one side is not working.----Pull the flywheel and inspect the magneto.

Yea I pulled the flywheel last night. I did some poking around under there and it appears that the #1 points set is a little dirty. I'm going to try to clean it up and see what happens. Could anyone tell me what the gap on the points is supposed to be?

BTW I just noticed I miss typed in the first post. My compression numbers are at 65 not 85. This should still be good on this little motor right?
