I have my qd-24 torn down, and I have a question about O rings. I’ll reference the crankshaft group diagram found here:

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...manufacturer=Johnson&section=Crankshaft+Group

In the parts diagram, there is an O ring at the bottom of the crankshaft that sits on top of the lower needle bearing, and rests in a grove in the cylinder case (part #7 on the parts diagram). This O ring is present on my unit. On the top side of the crank case, there is also a grove around the upper needle bearing that would hold the same O ring as on the bottom needle bearing. However, there is no o ring currently there, nor is one shown in the parts diagram. The question is, should I put a O ring in this upper grove around the needle bearing? It seems like one should go here, or why else would they have milled the grove into the crankcase? Would it hurt anything to put one there even there doesn’t appear to have been one there in the beginning?

Also, since there’s no gasket between the halves of the crank case, what type of sealant should I use when putting it back together? I’ve seen several types mentioned in different threads here and want to be sure I use the right one.

Thanks in advance.

apparently, the link isn't working, so I'll try to insert a parts diagram picture here.

No o-ring around the top bearing. If you look closely, you will see that is an oil return groove leading back to the intake manifold.

Proper sealant is Scotchgrip 847. Johnson/Evinrude/BRP part number 776964
