This is a follow up to a prev post. Motoring along and motor revved up like a spun hub, changed props and not a cure. I drained the lu and found milky fluid. Could this be the cause of my slippage. It seems to shift fine. Switch works good and good voltage to the wires. Prop locks up in forward and reversed like it should. Of course just by hand. It might be different under a load. If this is not a simple fix I think I will part the motor out or find a mechanical shift I can put this good powerhead on. Does it have to be a 40hp or will a similar year 35 leg and lu take a 40 hp power head?

Hopefully draining the gearcase and refilling with the proper Premium Blend, also know as Type C cures that problem. If not, the problem would be that the shift "spring" would be slipping on the forward shift "hub" at the higher thrust point, two very expensive parts if you can find them. The more rasonable alternative would be to find a good used electric shift lower unit, and yes, it needs to be the 40hp model.

but will this powerhead bolt onto a 35 or 40 hp manual shift leg? If I found a motor with a blown power head I might just swap the power heads.

You can move the power head. My 40 HP motor started out as an electric shift, and is now a manual shift.
