I have a 1963 Merc 1000 inline 6. Should I use a lead additive, or is this not needed? I do plan on running premium (91 or 93 octane).

Thanks

No lead additive needed or wanted. It's a two stroke, lead was for the valves on a 4 stroke.

Set the max advance at 34 degrees and run mid-grade gas. Premium could be worse depending on alcohol content.

-W

87 octane with quality oil 50/1 is all you need.
may want to adjust timing a bit to allow for new
fuel. not sure, but I believe merc put out a
bulletin on it and they said 23 degrees???
hopefully someone else will chime in to confirm.
you can also use the red "search" button above.
there has been tons of discussions on octane and
correct timing.
good luck,
M.Y.
