O ring on the prop seal or prop seal itself. Anyone know where I can get a lower unit seal kit that work with my boat. I found a few and they all had bad reviews.

Might as well take it apart.-----If there is one seal in there it is installed the wrong way.

Normally you would not see the seal on one of those.-------Part has been modified , or part installed backwards !---Just order the seals from a BRP / Evinrude dealer.----You get what you pay for in this case.-----Forget the online / cheaper stuff from offshore !

Something is funky about the seal housing also. You should not be able to see the seal. Order a seal housing while you are at it.

Just bought the entire seal kit. Going to pull the lower unit this weekend. Hopefully I don't run into a can of worms. Ever try stop leak?

Hue, I rebuilt the gear case of a 1961 40hp this summer. Wasn't too difficult, if you've seen a gear case before and know how they work (there's a couple of great YouTube videos) . The 2 piece gear cases are easier to work on than the 1-piece from the later years, imo. I think Brandon's garage is the video series I watched to learn the 2 piece gear case (I recommend pulling seals with real seal pullers, though). Let us know how it's going. I can post a few photos if that's helpful.

Thanks been watching a few of them. Was busy this weekend and still waiting for the seal kit. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Well it looks like there is something funky going on here. Both tubes have the same part number. Yet one is shorter and the impeller housing has no real in the intake tube. The unit is almost acting like a reservoir it like like.

Looks like someone extended'replaced the Return line and is just dumping the water out the exhaust, but that leaves the return opening on the pump open to exhaust which isn't a good coolant. Looks like the Grommet is missing on the Discharge side of the pump

Or the motor was a long shaft, and a previous owner removed the extensions, cut the supply pipe, but not the return pipe

Exactly how long have you owned this motor?

I've had it for 2 years. I got the motor running last year and used it all summer.

The lower unit is a newer one than came on it in 1963.-----Look at the parts diagram for say a 1969 model.with manual shift.

Might just solder in an piece of copper extension and get a new grommet. Wish I had of scene the missing grommet before I ordered the lower unit seals.

While I was at it i plastic media blasted the lower unit, welded the prop. Found a crack in the drain screw hole and that's where the water was coming in mostly im sure. Filled all of it with structural epoxy adhesive 1751 3M. Thanks for this tips on the 1969 lower unit! Looking into it.

It appears to have a double seal on both sides. Only one piece though. The one I ordered only has a single springed seal

There you go ----someone modified the part that was on your motor.----The one you got is how it left the factory in 1963.

Now i'm not sure where to route the circulated water line that's been cut. Possibly straight out of the hole where the grommet is missing? They share the same area where the screen is.
