Blunt answer / advice if you want to use it.-------That longer tube has been cut by someone.----You do not know if it is the correct length now !!-------So order the correct one as it is available new.----Order some grommets too.----If you could walk over I could help you !

First picture is a 1969 and second is a 1963.

Yes I know what these motors look like !-----Likely have one of each too.----Do you see that the newer lower casing does not have that plate on the side covering a water passage ?----Or let me say that you need a 1963 type lower unit to see how the 69 unit is arranged / works.

No there is no plate on the side. It has the screened opening into the drawing tube. That goes into the impeller housing. Then going up into the long tube in the picture then through the cylinder and water jackets then down and drains on top of the impeller housing freely

Well----Good luck with your project.----I know what these motor look like.----And it is not supposed to drain " freely " onto the impeller housing !----You need the proper length return tube from a 69 model as I already suggested !------The cooling system will not work without the proper length tube going to the proper place.----Bring it over and I fix for you in 15 minutes !

Anyone know if the pinion bearing housing is supposed to be flush?

Never mind I just needed to give it a few more taps until it mated with the thrust washer and spacers. Gears should line up better now.

Did you notice that the pinion bearing thrust washers are not both alike? Different I.D. and O,D. diameters. One rotates with the pinion and the other one stands still.

Not sure. When I pulled the lower unit the pinion bearing fell apart and the 2 washers and 1 thrust washer fell out. But replaced everything and there wasn't any missing parts. Not sure what the drive shaft support is.

Its not a 1969 because it never had 57, 58 or 59.

Its been a while. I was gone away for work but got it all back together. The issue of the pinion bearing was the bearing needed one last tap to seat properly. After a few more hiccups it's ready for a test run when it gets a little warmer out. Here is the finished product.

Your motor has a 1969 or 1970 gearcase installed.----Work carefully.

Boy I am having a hard time. Runs fine on the lake but at idle it overheats within a minute.

Got so hot it melted everything. Pulled out the old melted thermostat and then ran it without the cap and water is just spitting out the hole, almost nothing making it threw the jackets but when I put the shop vac on the opening it was sucking straight through the impellor.

How did they convert the 1963 to work with the 1969 lower unit. Right now its just dumping into the lower unit area.

Well I looked deeper and the exhaust housing has a huge hole in it and appears to be deteriorating. Found a whole bunch of the pot metal all around the impeller
