Hello All... Yet ANOTHER problem with the old motor.

1963 Johnson 75hp V4AL-15E. Tooling around the lake all morning, engine slips out of gear after 30 minutes or so of running wide open. It went back into gear and I was able to limp back to the dock, but as soon as I tried to go fast it slipped out with a series of thuds as if it was trying to stay in.

Using electric shift oil, and it seems to stay in gear at low rpm.

Thanks everyone...

All connections are critical with the electric shift engines. That includes both ends of the battery cables. Engine and battery.

You may have a slipping clutch dog in the lower unit but your symptoms sound more like you are losing electrical power.

That's interesting... it is worth noting that when it slipped out at first the amp gauge pegged all the way to the + side.

Will check all connections and report back.

Have you checked the drive pin, have you checked to see if you might have a spun prop hub?
If I remember correctly, those electric shift lower units used a spring and hub to engage the gears, there is no clutch dog in the lower unit. They would shift very smooth. If it is making a thud, look at the drive pin, maybe it's sheared and jumping past the broken ends.

Just off the top of my head it sounds like a hub and spring going bad or an intermittent loss of current going to the lower unit.

Both of the above are right. I forgot about no clutch dog.

Look closely at the wres going down into the lower unit. A short in one would explain your amp spike.

Unfortunately, I don't think its an electrical problem.... The forward and reverse wires leading to the lower unit are both getting battery voltage when switched.

I thought taking a video might help you guys see what I'm talking about, so check out the link if you can. It shifts into gear fine, but watch what happens when I rev it up... Notice the cover bouncing around.

Thanks again guys.

Did you check the resistance of the shift coils? 8 ohms normal, wiggling the wires could show an intermitent short or open. Watching the cover bounce, do it a few more times and it will be in the water heading for Davy Jones Locker

Re: 1963 Johnson Slipping out of Gear

I managed to get a donor lower unit from the exact same engine a few towns away. Go figure.

I tore it apart but couldn't figure out how to get the prop shaft off. On the plate surrounding the prop shaft, there are four screws, and two threaded holes. Am I supposed to thread bolts into those holes to push it off? Are there any tricks to taking it off?

If anyone could give me an idea of what to expect / how to further disassemble this thing, I would appreciate it. Thanks again!

Hmm.... Found this picture. I assume the gear in the middle has to be removed first.
