I have a 1963 Merc 60 Twin 6 hp that came with my old 1974 26 ft sailboat. It seems to run well and pushes the boat without any troubles. I'm a little concerned about the age of the motor. It was services in 2002-I don't know what was done, but the previous owner spent about $300 on the tune-up.

How reliable are these old motors--I'm considering purchasing a newer motor, but I not sure if I need too????

--by the way I'm running 50:1 mix is that correct?

Tx Brent

Ahoy, BJN.

There are thousands of small outboards built in the 50s and 60s still in regular service. A "new" 6hp isn't likely to gain you much if you take care of the one you have.

It is time to replace the water pump impeller, clean and gap points and plugs and maybe do a decarbonizing treatment.

A Repair Manual would be a very good investment and save you lots of bux on routine maintenance.

Bon Voyage. :)
