I bought my 9.5 10 about 10 years ago. Since I've had it, all I've done to it is replace the water pump and plugs every couple of years or so. Didn't need to do anything else. A couple of weeks ago it started being hard to start and was surging at high speed so I went through the whole thing. New points, plugs, carberator kit. Got it running and starting great.
In the barrel with the cowl off, it idles as sweet as any small outboard I've owned. Just tics them off. Put the cowl on though and it will die out unless the throttle is opened up some. About a 200rpm difference I estimate. And it runs just a tad rougher with the cowl on. Is that cowl starving it for air? I think I remember others on this forum having similar problems but couldn't find it in any search's. River Boy

So you are trying to run it in a barrel with the cowl on?? Forget it, it isn't going to happen. Actually, I'm surprised that you don't know that after owning it for 10 years.

Now if it won't run properly with the cowl on when on a boat in the lake, that's a different story. There are a host of things that cause that. But we'll worry about that when the time comes.

Ouch! That hurt. Re-read my post. Waterpump and plugs! Never had it in a barrel before. Actually FR, I'm surprised you didn't know that from reading my post. Did you read the whole post FR or just enough so you could snark a little bit?

Hey, I don't know why you took offense at anything I said. Nowhere in your original post did you say you've never had it in a barrel before. Since you are doing it now, I just sort of assumed you've done it before. At any rate, I didn't do any snarking. I only gave the information you asked for--why it smothers out with the cover on when in a barrel--it's normal. If you are looking for more information, it is because it is breathing it's own exhaust fumes.

I don't know why I even bother. I give out free information that I took years learning and I get condemned for it. Phooey.

That's so, I didn't say anything about when I put new plugs or checking the water pump in it about hauling it off the boat and throwing it in a barrel to see if the new plugs work. You just said you ASSUMED I did.

Hey no harm done. I'm a big boy.

Actually though, I'm surprised that after 12,000+ posts and Fleet Admiral and all that you don't know you don't have to haul a motor off the boat and throw it in a barrel every time you put new plugs in or look at the water pump.

FR, sometimes I feel under appreciated myself.

Just for your information, I spent 24 years, 6 days a week, year round, as a full time, factory trained outboard motor technician for an Evinrude dealer. Our shop was land-locked, it was about five miles to a place where we could test a boat in the water. Because of that, EVERY small motor I worked on got tank tested in a ventilated professional test tank, with a test prop. So, maybe I didn't have to?

F_R. I have to say that I appreciate fully your effort and help on this forum. I think I speak for the majority when I say you are certainly viewed as one of the "Top Guns" of OMC repair and trouble shooting. Don't give up on us, we need people like you.

River Boy, you are very fortunate indeed to have a motor that has given you no trouble for ten years. I have not been so lucky. If you followed regular posts on the 9.5 (and it would seem you have not) you would have seen by now it is a common problem that they don't do well in a barrel. One of the fundamental purposes for this forum is advancing the knowledge and education of all us OMC owners. Sometimes it is in our best interest to be slow to take offense as our motors reliability can change in an instant and we will be dependent on the expertise of the forum members to get us back up and running, and they will not disappoint. Best of luck. Rick.
