Morning all,

I figured I'd posted enough questions and done enough research for this project on iboats that I should put it all together in one write up.

My best friend for the last 10 years is an English expat. He shares his father's taste in all things vintage and stylish, so I wasn't surprised when I learned his father purchased this 1964 MFG 16.5' Edinboro runabout almost two years ago from the guy that lives next to his neighborhood launch ramp. The seller knew it had a broken trim cylinder on the repower he had installed about 10 years earlier, a 1994 Johnson 48SPL. He received an estimate for $800 to replace it and decided to cut his losses. Our gain!

This is her the first weekend we brought her home in mid summer 2011. The removable hard top sealed the deal - I was in love. This boat looked like it should be piloted by JFK himself. The deck was solid, top foam looked great, and the glass was REALLY thick on boats of this era.

Turns out instead of a full trim cylinder it just needed a plastic clip at the end of the cable (or so we thought). We planned to run it as-is by manually actuating the cylinder with a screw driver.

During our work on the trim cylinder we noticed a disturbing amount of flex in the transom. We decided to open it up and it was completely rotted - it made really nice compost! So we cut the inner skin and started scooping.

IMAG0015.jpg

After everything was cleaned out and ground down we rebuilt the transom from two layers of 5-ply oak, soaked in epoxy. We transom was not flat, it had a slight curve which we traced on to a 1 x 6 and then used as a clamp once everything was in. We cut our transom pieces in to about 5 sections, scored them with a circular saw, and ground the edges and beat them in to the transom for a super tight fit. Here is everything trimmed down:

We got the outboard mounted back up the next evening and we were ready for shakedown!

The shakedown ended abruptly when the outboard died and we had to get towed in. We spent the rest of last season hunting down an ignition problem which we think we have now narrowed down to a bad power pack.

In our haste to prepare for this season we broke the trim cylinder by actuating it manually and were dead in the water.

I don't have any photos but we did procure a power trim unit off a salvaged 50HP which is now installed and works great.

Hauling her out before Hurricane Irene last year not only broke the axle on the 30 year old trailer but also revealed a disturbing amount of water in between the two hulls. I think I've tracked the source of the leak to some unpatched holes under the seats from old mounting brackets. During a period when I wasn't paying attention to the boat the owners let it fill up with about 6 inches of rain. These boats have no wood outside of the transom and it had all winter to dry out, so I'm hoping it's fine.

I spent all day yesterday scraping the bottom - there was at least 5 layers of varying colors of paint on this old hull. It cleaned up pretty well.

That is how it sits today. A few coats of bottom paint, new seats, new latches for the hard top and we'll be ready to go this summer. The boat will sit in a slip at the community dock so I wanted to make sure the bottom paint was done well.

I have some more photos I'll have to download from Facebook. I'll post them up later.

Not too shabby for a few 20-somethings, eh? Hopefully it's nice to see "younger" people with an appreciation for old boats.

Until next time!

Here is a quick video of us out on the bay last summer. About 30 knots probably.

Hey Crash, you got my boat man hard top and all! Yours seems to be in a little better shape then when I started my restore..Does it have the original steering wheel? Looks like the mfg emblems are still there those are hard to find. I replaced my transom with seacast and raised it on each side of the motor..Glad to see another MFG saved from the scrap yard.
BTW in your last pic I noticed the cinder blocks that are holding up the bow are turned the nonstructural way. You should turn them with the open ends facing upward just like you would use them for building a wall. There stronger and more stable that way ..
Click on my restore thread below and check out your I mean my Edinboro Custom..

Good looking old boat love the hardtop. Kinda surprised there's no splashwell but I'm sure it makes it roomy.

If you look at the video it seems he has a splashwell. Prolly took it off to do the transom.

Thanks for the comments. It's in fantastic shape for a 48 year old boat... but there's still some things that need doing. It has the original steering wheel with the logo in the center, but it was really cracked. It has some filler in it now and we'll be sanding it down and painting it before launching.

The starboard side metal logo towards the transom is long gone. I'm thinking about removing the port side and maybe having two replicas cast before this one goes missing too. May also just replace them with vinyl in the meantime.

We thought about seacast. Great product but miiighty pricey.

There is less than 100 lb. on that front beam so I'm not super concerned about the orientation of the blocks. I was blocking it solo and when you're holding the bow up by yourself you become less concerned with how it's oriented than with just getting it up haha. That was a sketchy moment.

If you look at the video it seems he has a splashwell. Prolly took it off to do the transom.

It does have the original splash well, however it no longer fits tight along the contour of the transom and we're thinking about ditching it. We are really hesitant to screw in to the new transom, even with 5200 as sealer, just because that introduces plenty of places for water to come in.

I found some more photos on Facebook, loading them up now. Hopefully bottom painting tomorrow and should have it back on the trailer by Sunday.

Lots of memories in the boat already and we've only had half a season on it. Hopefully this year will be even better!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. sphelps - We'd definitely consider it but you seem to be pretty far away from us haha.

Got a bit more work in today. Plan was to scrape the transom, sand everything, wipe it down, and get down a coat of bottom paint. I got cheap-o 25% stuff, but since we haul in the winter anything will have to get covered over, so why spend a ton?

The best laid plans of mice and men...

Scraped the transom and found a nice present hidden under the paint!

I'm hoping this little bastard didn't let water in to our brand new wood core transom. Got everything sanded and we'll have to grind and glass this up this weekend. Throws everything off by a week.

The bow light lost its color on the green lens. We can't find a replacement lens and wanted to reuse the fixture since it's original.

I found some transparent green paint at Michael's crafts and decided to give it a go. It didn't turn out half bad.

20120502_151258.jpg

It's still pretty clear, but it looks better. I'm going to do about 3 more coats over the next few days and see how it turns out.

This boat was never destined for a bottom-up resto. Just enough to get it usable and get noticed on the water. So far so well.

Until next time,

Not 100% sure on the year... going with what the PO said.

We're in Annapolis, MD. The green paint looks better in the photo than it does in person, but it isn't half bad.

Re: 1964 MFG Edinboro - Weekend Warrior Semi-Resto

Haven't had a chance to get much done due to work. I'm taking the week of the 14th off and hope to have it splashed by then.

I decided to forgo the glass on that transom crack and to just grind it down and fill it with Marine-Tex. It's just in the gelcoat from when the old transom was shot. The new transom is fine and doesn't flex at all.

So, grind and fill the crack, bottom paint, repair the seats, and we're on the water.

Getting close now.

Re: 1964 MFG Edinboro - Weekend Warrior Semi-Resto

I figured I'd update everyone on this fabulous boat. Shortly after the last photos were taken we noticed it was sitting much lower in the slip than it had been. After pulling it out for the June 2012 derecho I noticed water POURING out of several cracks in the keel which I missed when bottom painting. There was a previous repair that had been done poorly which I didn't pay attention to in my rush to get it launched last year. Time and money got in the way and the boat sat in the drive... until 2 weeks ago.

Back up on the blocks she went! A day of grinding the old repair and cracks out and some UGLY but functional fiberglass work by yours truly and it was intact again.

A few alternating layers of CSM and woven, topped with some thickened epoxy and some bottom paint. Back on the trailer and in the water the week before the 4th of July.

Don't forget a carb rebuild! This motor looks like it has less than 100 hours on it.

The latches for the top were broken in the middle of last season, so it is awaiting repair. It needs to be skim-coated and painted too. Probably will have to wait for the off season.

Having some idle issues with the engine so it may go to the outboard mechanic next week. Aside from that, some auto trim tabs are in line and it's going to continue to be a great Bay boat.

Until next time!
