1964 Sea King Impeller replacement

I just bought a 1964 Sea King 5 hp motor. It runs great but does not pump water.I have tryed taking the bottom 4 bolts off,but it wont come off. It drops about a half inch.Is there something else I need to take off to get to the impeller.Thanks

Yes, you have to disconnect the shift rod. Are you sure it is a 1964? Makes a difference because different companies made them. Model number please.

Well at least now we know that you have a West Bend/Chrysler. Unfortunatly, I don't know where the shift disconnect is. Take a peek in the gap where the lower unit dropped down and see if it is in there. Also, some Chryslers had an exposed turnbuckle type disconnect on the front corner of the midsection

OK, I looked it up. Shift into reverse, unbolt and drop the lower unit down as far as it will go, an look in the gap. You will see the upper and lower shift rods with flattened ends and with two screws through the flat parts. The two screws join the upper and lower sections of the rod. Remove them and the lower unit will come on off.

Good Morning, Ok when I put the motor in reverse the lower unit closes the gap.In other words it pulls the unit up tight. Now with it in the forward postion I can see in there real good.The rods go into something round. You can't see any screws at all. I will say that the rod closes to the propeller has a pin in it. But can't see where that would do much. Do you thing taking the propeller off would help....

The pin I was talking about was a push pin and it did release one of the lines.The one closes to the propeller. The middle rod does not have that push pin. Cant find where that would release. One down two to go.

The one on the left side I got its the one with that push pin.Now its just the middle one and the one on the right.

I don't understand. What push pin? Here is what I see in your picture:

On the left is the water pump outlet with rubber grommet. The water tube slips into that. No release needed

In the center is the drive shaft. No release needed on that one either.

On the right is the shift rod. You are right, there is no connector in there. I hate to say it, but unless there is a disconnect access window on the other side of the midsection you are going to have to remove the powerhead and disconnect it at the top end. Lots of old OMC motors did the same thing so don't feel bad.
