Hi all
I am doing a complete overhaul of my evinrude 18hp and have a carb. question that I cannot seem to find an answer to.

When I bought this motor it had a sponge like material behind the silencer plate that was cut to match the footprint of the silencer and sandwiched between the plate and the carb support.
Nobody who carries parts has heard of such a thing.
Did this motor have a particle pad or not?

Thanks for any input
Terry

Hi tm. I have a '66 20hp Johnson and it doesn't have any sort of foam pad. However, I see from the pars diagram that your Evinrude did have some sort of "Silencer pad". Unfortunately, it appears to no longer be available. However, I wouldn't worry about it. My Johnson of the same year doesn't have one it and it works just fine. While you may find various "air silencers" on outboards, designed to help make the motor run more quietly, outboards generally don't need fine-mesh "air filters" as such. No dust on the open water after all. Here are some handy links.

My 56 has a material that looks/feels like 50 year old fiberglass batting.
The kind they use for insulation.
loose pack in chamber of silencer.

(I guess its really 57 year old fiberglass batting)

Pro, you must have a 30hp? I don't remember anything in the 18hp silencer.

The reed valves are a scource for a lot of the noise from a 2 stroke engine.--------Various attempts were made to " silence " them in the old days.------They had those bulky silencers on the 25 / 35 HP motors in the mid 50's .----same sort of thing on the early 18 HP motors.---Then they tried that sponge pad on the 20 HP motors.---Plastic boxes on the motors of the 1980's.-------What really keeps the reed noise down these days is a rubber coating on the reed boxes.--Found on some Yamaha / Johnson / Evinrudes of the 1990's.

The '66 20hp is also supposed to have a silencer pad. Yeah, I suppose it will run fine without it though. Can't say that I've ever compared with and without.

If it's not available you don't need it for the motor to run properly.

Probably, but it was long gone by the time I got it. I keep the cowl on 99% of the time anyway and haven't had any issues. It's really not even that loud once I got the cowl to stop rattling around so much.

Hi Racerone
This motor did have a sponge/foam 1/4" thick piece behind the silencer pad, but it was in poor shape and mostly destroyed as only a small piece remained.
This fastwin only has leaf valves and plate which is not coated.

Rubber coating on reed valves never entered anyone's mind in 1965 at OMC.------The reed valves on this 18 HP make a lot of noise !

I replaced the Evinrude carb silencer foam with new green foam from a lawnmower outer pre-cleaner wrap around air filter foam that I cut into correct shape. This type of foam is fuel proof. You can make several from 1 pre-cleaner. Stock photo attached of briggs air filter.

I remember our 1964 5 1/2 having a plate with a sponge foam held to it by an other plate full of holes that was directly in front of the carb throat.
Our 1957 35hp had a huge silencer, I decided one day to take it apart. Was I ever disappointed, I was expecting something far more interesting, but in the end discovered it to be just a plenum that would dampen the sound pulses. Our 1963 40hp Electramatic had the big sponge lined fiberglass hood, that really shut the engine up, as all the racket could be unleashed by opening the hinged door on the cowl
