you put a 2x4 in your barrel to see if the prop was spinning?
from now on, plz dont do that as it is no problem to tell if the prop is turning in a barrel, a motor that size will push plenty enough water to know it!!

Better than stickin your arm in! lol

The push button they are referring to is this type of shifter in pic. You might check that the switch that is there in your shifter works when you shift it into either gear...you seem to have a bad connection when the switch is supposed to be in forward gear. You can disconnect the light green wire at the knife disconnect in the motor then check for continuity back to the shifter make sure it's good...it's either the wire or the switch. Enjoy!

The shifter that Redwing4900 has pictured was used by Evinrude....Johnson used a different approach to the controller.....hope that is some help......Another thought.....I have seen several threads on the OMC outdrive forum discussing the methods that OMC used for the shifting on the electric shift models there may be some help there in understanding how the mechanism works...good luck in your search and repair...

As mentioned, the Evinrude Selectric box had pushbuttons to shift gears. Yours shifts gears a little diferently, just by pushing the throttle lever forward or back.

I've used the flushing ears the last few times, so I could see for sure if the prop is spinning, but can't get it started now. Not sure what I might've done wrong this time????

I make no claims of being an expert but do not believe "flushing ears" or muffs will work properly on that motor. I will try to find a link to the old Tempo flush device specifically designed for your motor and post it later. Meanwhile, I recommend you only run it in a trash can or barrel FULL of water to make sure the water pump is primed. You are getting some excellent advice from some very knowledgeable forum members and I hope you can get that great old motor running properly. Good luck!

Thank you for that link to the tempo motor attachment. I had been told by a friend that there was some kind of attachment like that, but was also told I could use the flushing ears. But, seeing that, I'll definitely go back to using the can FULL of water for now. Thanks again..

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

You said you have been reading about this but you did not say what you are reading. My non-factory service info says 7-8 ohms is what the readings should be. The link below will get you to a free online library that has lot's of info scanned and saved.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=393281

LOGIN as directed then drill down to: Small Engines, Marine/Boat Motors, Evinrude/Johnson, Outboard 40HP (1956-1964) and, finally, Condensed Service Data. It has procedures for checking the electric shift circuits. Good luck!

EDIT: Here's a link to a Johnson factory manual that covers your model starting at page 475.
