1965 Johnson FD-19D 18HP

​​ Just received this motor from my brother in law. It`s not firing , the points look terrible so I ordered points and condensers. The coils checked OK. Probably needs a carb rebuild and impeller but this is just a winter project and wanted to get it firing first. He had the fuel pump replaced and had it converted to electric start . Would like to ask if I can move the fuel pump to the upper port and rotate the fuel inlet and outlet 90 degrees

The fuel pump will work on either cylinder. As for rotating it, don't know what pump you have or why you want to rotate it. But yes the inlet / filter cap can be rotated on most pumps. As for the outlet, you ought to keep the pump somewhere near right side up, but they will work upside down. However, you may experience an air lock problem if upside down.

Thank you F_R, the original type of fuel pump is obsolete and unavailable but this one is really tight and rubs the cowl. Good to know I can move it.I will most likely replace the fuel lines and only rotate it if I have a clearance problem with the cowl.

I am in the process of disassembling , I will post a picture shortly. My BIL had someone replace the fuel pump .

believe 0388684 fits more flush -- would provide more space under the hood. In any case, some of the square pumps extend further than others -- looks like you may have one of those. [h=1][/h]

If the coils are original even though they might look ok they will leave you stranded sooner or later and im betting on sooner.Even the tinest crack will be enough.Coils can also seem fine when cold but under load an hot they will breakdown.I personally would replace them if i was in doubt of their age and add new wires also.First a compression check should be made to make sure your not wasting money on a poor motor.

Move the pump to the upper cylinder and turn it right side up. If it hits the hood, take a hacksaw to the three mounting posts on the bypass cover.

Thanks everyone for the advice and links.I will replace the plugs- wires- coil-points--condenser - fuel pump- thermostat-impeller-rebuild the carburetor - change gear oil . I checked the compression with this old gauge and got 100 lbs on both cylinders. I drained the gear oil , really nasty but no water . Got her stripped down to pressure wash and paint until I get all the parts together. Almost forgot , new decals. wires and fuel lines.

Take a good look at the wee pump.----Factory ones were marked with an arrow and UP in one spot.

Your right, I`m sure it the original 54 years old. Where would I find A replacement or could I make one out of vacuum hose ?

Finished the FD-19D 18HP
I haven`t started it yet but if has good spark. Replaced everything listed in post #12 . I don`t have a boat to put it on anyway. It`s to big for my Alumacraft 1432. I`ll keep my eyes open for a boat.

The 65 big twin series with the space age looking cowling I think is the most beautiful and artistic cowling out there. If you want to save $, the decals that are not the original type but of simple type are great and actually make the outboard look more modern if that is your goal.
