Today I picked up a 1981 Seasweral tri hull with a 1965 Kiekhaefer MERC 500 50hp Serial #1844604. I am a former automotive mechanic, how ever I never dug into the outboards. So, yes I understand that the number 1 piston needs to be top dead center, How ever there is still the issue of the timing mark or location on the the gear and were to point it to or at. I have ordered up 2 of these belts and should get them in the next 4 days. Can some one give me some advice please. Thank you

Take the plate off the top of the distributor pulley.-----Timing mark is there.

With the flange off the the timing pulley and #1 at TDC, the arrow points exactly to the flywheel and centerline of the crank. You may need to lead or lag a tooth on the belt to get it lined up.
