I have a 20hp 1966 Chrysler outboard. Model# 20601---Serial# 3892. I got this Motor from a friend of a friend, so I don't know much about it and I don't know jack about outboards. When I got it the Power head was shot. I found the only guy in MN that would touch it. I guess that Chrysler outboards are looked down apon for some reason. My dad has a 9.9 of the same year and has never had a problem with it, so I don't get it. It has a new power head and the lower unit looks brand new. The problem I have with it is that when the motor warms up it's hard to start and it will run at half speed. When it's fresh it'll start right a way and run like a champ. Like you go to a fishing spot and when you goto leave it's a pain to start and runs at half speed if it starts. If you play with it in low idle it will sometimes get up and go, but you really have to play with it. When you move the throttle on the tiller arm there is nothing stopping the plate under the fly wheel from advancing the throttle on the carb. I was thinking that there is a short in a wire or the coil is bad. If any one has any idea's let me know. If anyone has a coil or what ever I need to fix this out let me know!

Thanks

Kevin

Hello pureevil and welcome to Iboats. The only mechanic to look at it wouldnt be Twin City outboard in Shokopee would it? I am from Blaine and have used them. Your guess on a faulty coil could be correct however they tend to crap out when hot so your motor would die when running at high speed.

Take the cowling off and pump the fuel bulb. Is any gas leaking from the carb? Will the fuel bulb get hard? My guess is your motor is flooding after you shut it off. Check the choke plate and make sure it is totally closed when you turn the choke off. If it is partially open it could be flooding your motor.

If the bulb wont get hard or fuel is leaking from the carb you could try adjusting the float but for 15 bucks from NAPA I would put a carb rebuild kit in it as long as you have to take it apart.

Good luck

Ahh , there IS another motor like mine still running ! I got a manual on Ebay for $ 6 shipped . They are HIGH if you order one straight out , ( $ 30 or so ) . I finally found someone to rebuild my carb ( no idle seems to be my problem )
and they wanted $ 140 to do it. I found a site that has a NEW old stock carb for $ 97 + shipping.
I might try fuel pump rebuild  next , couldn't hurt . Get a hydrofoil for your motor , tried mine out today and what a differnce !! Planes almost instantly and added a few MPH too . My prop seems to have some play in it , you can pull it in and out on the shaft abour 1/4 inch or so? Don't think it should be that way ? Is yours ? If you have a Auto zone , they have champion plugs that replace the original L - 4J plugs.

Steve
