hey guys, just bought a 1966 9.2 hp chysler and the starter solenoid has been disconnected. Anybody know where the wires go? I know one big post gets direct from battery, other big post goes to starter. There is a red wire that I think also goes to a big post (not sure) then the solenoid has a spade terminal that has to get a wire from somewhere? Or would anybody have a wiring diagram? I suspect somebody has jacked around with the wiring because there is also a brown wire with a ring terminal on it just hanging there. It doesn't reach any screw post that are close to it. Thanks for any and all help!

The red probably goes to the first post on the solenoid.
The color code way back then(brown) wasn't used so no telling what it's used for?
The solenoid MIGHT have 4 posts maybe 3 ???Pic??
The post on the inside close to the motor MIGHT be the exciter lead(yellow/red???)from the switch.
The post close to the cowl MAYBE a ground ?
Post a pic of the solenoid.

You probably have an autoelectric with a high hood and a light on top. If so, the brown wire powers the light. there should be a separate switch for it on the front of the engine. I forget exactly but the autoelectric starter is in constant contact with the crankshaft and acts as a generator when the engine is running. There should also be a diode rectifier on the backside of the starter. This is where I get a little fuzzy because there is a separate smaller wire to come from the rectifier to the battery terminal of the solenoid but I forget if it is red or not. As for the spade terminal, trace the wire from the "S" terminal of the ignition switch and you will find which is the start wire.

I had a 10 hp autoelectric and the switch was in the front of the cowling. It started almost every time with the first turn of the key--great little engine for someone who does not have the strength to pull a manual start engine.

Yes the brown wire is the light, which I could care less about at this time. I moved the rectifier wire to the battery side of the solenoid and ran a wire from the (S) of the key switch to the spade term on the solenoid and the starter worked. I cranked it for no more than ten seconds and smoke started rolling out from around the fly wheel. Smelled electrical of course. I'm almost ready to use this motor for an anchor!!!

If the engine does NOT have a manual starter, you can always swap in the starter from another 9.9. My engine had a manual starter that --in order to use--was set up so you needed to remove the cover and pull straight up on the handle.
