1966 FD-20 C won't start

So I bought a 14' aluminum boat with this motor and just kind of hoped that it would work, right? Dumb, I know but I did trust the guy I bought it from. Anyway, I changed the busted fuel line, spark plugs and put new mixed gas in it (50:1). I have pulled on this dog-goned thing so much that I think I have just about pulled my arm out of socket. It is trying so hard to "turn over". It fires and almost runs. I have tweaked the little lever in front that a buddy says adjusts the leanness whatever that is. Can anyone of you smart guys guide me as to what to do? I sure would appreciate it. Thanks.

Start with the simple things first. Fuel line not reversed? The arrow points toward the motor. Also, make sure the tank is vented. Pump the bulb until firm. Choke.

Good compression? Good fuel? Read the top secret file at the top about awakening a sleeping outboard... or troubleshoot a non starting outboard.. it's all up there... It should start in 2 pulls... I have a fd-20c also

Thanks. I'll try that. BTW, does OMC stand for original manufacturing company? I thought it was specific to Evinrude and Johnson....thanks for your guidance.

HI Alsdad. OMC = Outboard Marine Corporation, and they made Johnson/Evenrude/Gale motors. OMC went under and is now call Bombardier, so if you see any of those names they're all OMC. The good news is that many of there parts are interchangeable too.
The "leaness" your friend describe referes to fuel/air mix :

Lean = not enought fuel/oil mix in engine, bad b/c without engough fuel motor can't run, and if it does run it may run too hot due to lack of oil, which you must pre-mixed with the gas in the proper ratio (50 gas : 1 oil)
Rich = opposite of lean = too much fuel getting to engine, which may cause it to "flood" and konk out. Not quite as bas a leaness b/c at least motor is getting sufficient lubrication, but may prevent engine from running properly and/or may cause motor use more gas than it should.

The trick is to find just the right mix of fuel and air for your motor. This is achieved by adjusting the lean/rich knob(s) on the carb. Just takes trial and error. Hope that helps. Gobble, Gobble.

OMC stands for Outboard Marine Corp.
Originally OMC was created when Evinrude bought up a bunch of outboard companies. Ended up with Evinrude and Johnson and the Gale devision.
Originally E/J motors were completely different. In the early 50s they became esentially the same motors.
