1966 Merc 65HP Starter Problems

My Merc's starter has developed a mind of its own. With the Lever in Neutral, the starter engages without the key being turned (will even engage without the key in the ignition). With the Lever elsewhere (F or R) the starter will not work even with the key. As I shift between F and R, the starter kicks in and if the engine is running, it does the same - not good.

What could it be?

That sounds like a shorted ign. switch the reason it don't do anything in gear is the safety switch for neutral is blocking the circurt

That was it! A wire had been cut into and was shorted out. Thanks.
