Champion J4C is the recommended plug.

If you're having problems with fouling plugs:
- Make sure you're fuel oil mix is not too rich, should be 50:1
- Use a quality oil
- Make sure the thermostat is installed and working properly. A cold running engine will idle poorly and tend to foul plugs.
- If all the above check out and you're doing alot of extended slow speed operation (trolling), you could try a heat-range hotter plug, the J6C.

-John

Fishin..... Use Champion J6C plugs, gapped at .030.

Check your carburetor adjustment as follows with whichever carburetor might apply to your engine.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.
--------------------------------------------------
(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: 1967 18hp spark plug choice??

Fishin.... As "John from Illinois" has stated, the J4C is the recommended spark plug, and my post was not intended to be a contradiction.

The J4C plugs will function properly if all else is as it should be. However, there are times when the J4C has a tendency to foul or breakup somewhat when the engine is not quite up to par.

Should this happen OMC recommends that the alternative spark plug (Champion J6C) be used to hopefully eliminate that problem (a slightly hotter plug).

At speed does the engine ram back into gear? Does it feel like you're hitting a log? Hate to tell you but your clutch dog is probably worn. That's the device in the LU that shifts you in and out of gear.

There's chance that it's a linkage adjustment, you could try that, it's behind the shift lever. I have many 18's and love em all :)

I had a similar problem and found it easier to just replace the whole lower unit if you can find one. I don't know if you can find a replacement clutchdog for that motor, but if you can then just try that. I would take less than 2 hours at most to replace it.
