I wonder if you have something blocking the pulse from the motor to the pump. It seems that your pump isn't working at all. Try running it with the gas tank higher than the motor. I tried replacing the check valves in mine and think I messed them up..bought a NOS pump off ebay and it ran like new. Those little check valves are expensive for what they are.

Yeah, I am going to check into a pressure problem from the crank case. I was told by a guy , that if I have alot of wear on this motor it may not be strong enough to run the pump .Going to run a compression test when my nieghbor brings my tester back. It runs strong and is not likley this is my problem.

Check the fitting on the motor where the pulse comes from and see it it's plugged up with crud.

When pulling it over I am getting good air movement out of the holes on the block where the pump mounts too. Going to put it all back together and try it again tonight ,I will report back with results .

I have been having the same exact problem with my 1972 9.8. I have done everthing you have with the same result. I just ordered a fuel pump check valve kit that includes 2 new check valves the diaphram and the gaskets. Go to Mercury Marine parts express and type in this part number and see if it matches the ones in your pump. 21-30430A2. Mine look pretty old and rusty so that may be the problem. If anyone else reads this that may have some insight on how they work (the check valves) and what problems they cause it would be greatly appreciated.

I have got her running now. I cleaned those check valves with carb cleaner and blew it out good . I then resealed all gas line fittings with teflon tape put pump back on and she fired right up and let it idle for a good ten minutes , No loss of gas in the bowl. All I can figure is that either my check valves where sticky or that I was sucking some air from a fitting . I will take it for a test drive tonight and see how she acts under power,it is on a 13 ft Fiberglass fishing boat .
Thanks. Brian

Check valves??? Are you saying the metal fitting that goes into the motor is sucking in air? Or the line or tank? I'm not too advanced when it comes to mechanical terms.

They say there is two happiest days of a boater..the day you buy it and the day you sell it...I think there is a third..the day you get the motor running after it drives you crazy. Congrats on getting it running, I love those old little 110's

Ryans, the check valves I am refering too are inside the fuel pump housing and are very small pieces ,they are in each end of where your gas lines connect. You will have too take the fuel pump off in order to see where they are. I would suggest taking all your connections on the gas lines clean and reseal them, at that time inspect the diaphrams in the pump and make sure your float is working correctly, along with cleaning out the filter or replace it.

Are you talking about the hose that runs from the motor to the tank or the smaller black hose about 12 inches long that runs on the inside?

I got 2 cans of sea foam "yes two cans" put it in the 5 gallon tank and its ran like it never has before. Ran a little rough at first but i reved it up and down for about 10 mins and now its running smoother and faster than I can ever remember. Im going to be making a practice to put at least one can in every full tank.
