I changed the seals on my lower unit and chipped the part that holds both seals(0-ring and oil seal)on the propeller shaft. The manual says its called a Bearing Head. However, Ive seached high and low for the part by this name and nobody seems to have it or know what it is. If anyone knows it by another name or where i can find it, I will be greatful. Thanks for ya'lls time.
model # 67-cd
ser#J2785597

My manual calls it a 'Seal Retainer'. You might also call it the 'propshaft seal retainer' which seems more descriptive to me.
Try Twin City Outboards for the part. I can't imagine they'd want much for one.

Hi Nick,
Try a bench vice or a press... In a pinch, I once saw someone at a boat race use the front bumper of his pickup. He jacked up the truck, and used a block between the bumper and part to press the seal into place as he slowly lowered the truck.... I make no claims as to the safety or adviseablity of this method - just saw it done once - successfully, I might ad.
- Scott

Press is the correct way, with the correct driver/remove of course.2LB hammer not.
My favorite is a Snapon Ballpean 8ounce.Yes 8 ounce. And a socket just smaller than the O.D. of the seal.Maybe other brand hammers work as well. (GRIN).

The secret,if it is one, don't use extreme force.Nudge it into place and it will go in evenly.Hit too hard on one side, and it jams,so you have to hit harder on the other side, and now you have a distorted seal.

Try 'gearcase head' looking for your part.Where is the chip on it?If the oring area and seal area are okay, reuse it.

DHP

ps most ujoints only need 8 ounce for replacement

Hi Nick
The OMC part# for your part is #382291 gearcase head & bearing, oil retainer. This is one of those parts that has many names for the same part. If you use the number you will have better odds of obtaining the correct piece. Still no gaurentee though.

Thanks for the help fellows. I picked up the new bearing today, which lucky already had the seal pressed into it. So the lession is: Ask an expert before you force it. It will save you $135.14.

Thanks for all the help
Nick
