I was given a 1968 35HP merc Magneto system. I have installed new points, condensers, when using a ohmmeter on the terminal block it shows continuity when I open the points no change. However if I discount the ground wire on the laminated core and run the test have continuity with the points closed and then with the points open it test correctly.

I have no idea what my problem is?

I think the ground is good. When I put a spark plug light tester on and ground it to the motor the spark comes through however I think is coming from the ground to the tester.

Your OHM meter is reading the ground through the primary winding in the coil. that's normal. It should read .50 to .65 resistance
