My grandfather has a 1968 Evinrude 100HP outboard on his 16' Larsen. It is equipped with an electric shift and the reversing coil went out on him. He is a retired electrician and tried to rewind/fix the coil. In doing so, he sheared the lead between the case and the coil and cannot repair it. I am looking for any advice as to what to do from here or where I might find another reversing coil. We have found new coils, but are looking for cheaper options if they exist. We would be interested in purchasing a used motor (working or not)for the parts.

Hi TJNedens:
Never worked on an electric shift. Sure would like to. It spikes my interest when you say it can't be fixed. Is it the solenoid itself thats damaged? What am I missing? If you're absolutely sure we can't fix this thing......
Sayler's Supply
780-454-7415
Tell them Randal sent you...he'll give you a deal

Thanks for the contact info. You're getting this second hand, but this is what Gramps told me about the problem; if you're interested...

He determined the reversing coil "went out", so he opened up the lower unit and gear box where both the forward and reverse coils are located. He removed the reversing coil and opened up its housing. When he opened the housing, he forgot to "unhook" the lead that connects the coil inside to the "post" on the outside of the housing (my terminology is probably not very accurate). So, he sheared the connector lead off. He rewound the coil and got that back in order, but when he went to put it all back together, he noticed his mistake with the sheared connector lead. He tried to splice the connection to make it work, but was unsuccessful in doing so. That's all I got from him so far.
