Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

It looks like im gonna have to assemble the transom bell housing and plate to be accurate on my cables. SO first thing first. Cut out the rear floor to drill the holes on the transom.
MAH002951.jpg

The parts need a lot of work.
MAH002902.jpg

So its three parts...and I have no Idea what to call them. So I will make up names and will correct them later. So if u guys can help me & be patient I would be one happy mofo. Sooo in this one i had to cut the shift cable cause I couldn't get it loose. Too rusted.
MAH002905.jpg

Then the water inlet tube and hose.
MAH002912.jpg

In order to separate from what I call the bell housing and the fork attached to I had to remove the steering lever arm.
MAH002913.jpg

and then remove the upper fork shaft.

So here they are separated.
MAH002922.jpg

The fork. Gonna sandblast it and then repaint along with the rest of the assembly. But first into the parts washer.
MAH002924.jpg

Now to remove the cable bellow and the hydro hoses.
MAH002927.jpg

After doing researching i have found out that you can drill a hole to get the clamps off the bellows.
MAH002931.jpg

Hoses coming off.
MAH002941.jpg

Now everything disassembled and in the parts washer for the week.

Sorry for the delay in posting but In the always pursuit in looking for an easier and a faster way to clean and remove paint I found this.
MAH003023.jpg

Its sandblasting kit for pressure washers. It took me 2 minutes to clean this part from this..........
MAH002907.jpg

to this.
MAH003011.jpg

Very good right, well not exactly. If u look close u see a hole.
MAH003013.jpg

As a matter of fact 4 of them! How could I not notice this? But then i saw this.
MAH0030111.jpg

A clear through shot. That?s when i noticed that it was my sandblasting. It looks like im gonna have to regulate the media or the pressure somehow. Back to fine tuning. I hope I can fix this with Marine tex.

PS. Sorry to hear about you boat CheapboatKev!!

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

After doing some adjustments I ran into a different problem. I half way plugged the siphon to minimize the sand. and it worked good.
MAH003065.jpg

After blasting the transom housing I went ahead and tried on the side of my boat and then on the top. Bad Idea....
MAH003051.jpg

the top warped!! But I think once I riveted it it will straight in out.

It left a good texture for the primer though .

That primer will bite into that. I doubt that paint will ever lift with that surface area for the primer to bite into.

Thats how you learn good, the hard way. Now im gonna sandblast the hull so i can learn not to do that too.

Gonna try to install it & see how bad or if its bad at all. But if it doesnt work than ill just buy a sheet to cut to fit.

Yeah Sprintist i think the paint will hold up. I can wait to flip her over

Well,, the top is screwed. Gonna have to get some aluminum to remake it. That sucks! Lesson well learned.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

What a good weekend, cleaned the garage and got ready to flip my boat. Yes flip my boat. I have read how some have been fliped with pulleys & neighbors. Well i don't quite know mine, plus they are elderly. Soooo, i had a plan.
I have one engine hoist already so I bought another @ harbor freight for 129. Plus if need i can sell it for 100$ on craigs. My plan was to use one on the front & one on the rear. On front just used the regular loop that it already had. On the rear I just bought 2 loop bolts at home depo & bolt them on the top 2 transom bolt holes.

Started lifting the front then went to the rear.

MAH003081.jpg

Very smooth so far, boat was well balanced out. Slowly turned it.

MAH003084.jpg

AN finally flipped.

MAH003087.jpg

Very smooth, really easy to flip like this. The hard thing was setting the boat back on the trailer since it was not made for an upside tin. But never the less I was able to stabilize it.

MAH003103.jpg

What I thought would be something hard to do was actually very easy with the right tools. But still had help from my brother & my little nephew. Always good to be safe.

Now its time for body work & then paint.

Real Easy Sprintst, just have cardboard ready so you wont scratch transom or front. I might just post the vid.

Ezombee all my friends are kind of freeloaders. I would have to stock the fridge with beer, food and god knows what. haha. But this is a personal project. As a way to say that I could do it if I use my head & the right tools, my personal accomplishment. I want to feel that rewarding feeling at the lake in my boat, with my fishing rod, with my drink, in my shangri-la.

I think I need therapy.

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

I would have had to pull the engine first but my back wouldn't have taken the beating it did painting while on the trailer.

I'll still have to wet sand and smooth it out a bit as I have orange peel...that I can deal with when I get bored. :)

Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

WOW Azlo, that was quite a flip!

I used my engine hoist (yep, $129 from Harbor Freight) to lift the front with a sling and roll it to the side. Not as easy to work on as flipping completely, but I didn't want to take off my cabin...plus I guess I'm too chicken to risk it too.

Well, great flip anyway. Gotta love the versatility of those hoists! :)

Yeah Hopeshefloats, Murphy hit me really hard when i sand blasted my hood, Jesus Christ. I found aluminum for a good 125$ smackaroos. But no problem I actually came with an Idea that when the time comes I will post it.
