1968 Johnson 65hp

I am going to look @ a 1968 johnson 65hp for sale I had a 1970 60 hp and I was wondering if the 68 is troubled by the hydro electric shift that my 1970 had (I had to repair it several times) and is there anything else I should know about this motor. Also I have to make it into a short shaft is that just a matter of removing the spacer plate and finding a shorter drive shaft.<br /><br />Any info would be great thanks

Elto....you don't really wanna tackle that 68' electric shift gear case. Look around and find something else. Hopefully you can find a manual shift.

Keep away from the shift solenoids!!! Nothing but bad news - learned the hard way. Manual shifts are much more prevalent.<br />bdub

I also own a Johnson 1968 65 HP V-4. Mine has manual shift. Is it possible that in 1968 they made both electric and manual shifts.

I have a 1969 Johnson 40 HP with manual, and I know for a fact they made electric shifts as well

There was what was called a "Heavy Duty" gear case. This was a two piece gear case and was manual shift. This type of gear case appeared on several of those older models.
