I have a 1968 OMC sterndrive, 120hp Chevy II engine...CUE16C...471 original hours!! Yes, I did say original!
I know about the Type C oil being required for the electric shift in the lower unit. (Electrical conductivity issue.) Here's my question: Can Type C be used in the upper gear box? Here's why I ask:
The service manual says to "use type a oil in the upper gear box" but the picture in fact shows the "Type C" Oil icon. I've re-read it numerous times to make sure I''m looking at the right picture. It appears to be a typo. I know that if C is required, the other stuff should not be used. Is vice versa true? If "type a" (which is hypoid 90 stuff...old term is all) is in fact what they DID mean, and I put in C, will it ruin anything? (Just so eveybody knows, I went ahead and filled it will C.)
Thanks...
