Yes I appreciate all you contribute to this site W.O.G. Hope we can have friendly bantering about materials and such from time to time :)

Sounds good Almincha! On the hot rod sites us car guys used to get together. I wonder if they do that here on iboats. The only thing better than being out on the water is working on boats!

Re: 1968 Sportcraft C-Gull work boat project

Foam, sigh...I want to build a sealed forward compartment under the bow and just forward of the hatches for more structure, and fill it with foam above deck. As for the rear, I'm not sure I want to put foam below decks. I considered mounting all the cap hardware with Loctite, flipping the cap upside down, then filling the cap with foam. Just don't know if it would stay up in there, or if it would rain yellow fuzz for the next 20 years.

I figured you were going to wuss out on the foam when you didn't put it in before the deck was laid, then I knew you were going to wuss out on it when you didn't install it right after the deck was laid.

Always remember and never forget, not enough foam is the same as no foam and there's no way you're going to be able to fit enough foam in the bow and/or under the cap to keep that boat afloat.

A Walleye is going to think he looks real cool sitting behind the steering wheel of that boat if it ever goes to the bottom.

You're 100% right. I was going to stand the boat up on end and fill the rear cavity but wussed out. Story after story of wet foam...I just kind of decided to launch the idea all together :(

Wet foam only happens when bad boat owners do bad things to good boats!

... but hey! It's your boat and you can build it anyway you want, and even if it is a sinker it's still a very sharp looking sinker.

Haha, jigngrub...you're right.

So, got 7 of us this morning to put the cap on without flexing or "crackling". Painted the floor with Epoxy paint and glued down carpet. I sanded the anodizing off the bow rail, polished everything. Every item that bolts to the boat has a cork gasket.

Move out and loss of heat 1 Jan 14, so I'm right on track and on time. I'll finish polishing the windshield then install the seats, interior, rubrail, Mercury 4 stroke and controls, and send her off for a top if I don't make a t-top for her.

Here she is so far...

Thanks guys! Hey, if it's warm and lighted, I'm there almincha :)

My mom took one look at it today and said, "Yes, you better sell this right away". Guess she knows what will happen to the condition of it as soon as it hits the water.

Thanks Zool. It's aluminum so I wet sanded it with 220(took off the anodizing), then 400, 1000, 1500 then Turtle wax red rubbing compound. I need to hit it with nevr-dull, then a final polishing compound for a mirror finish. It may sound daunting but it really only took about 30 minutes.

The anodizing was prolly mostly gone anyway..let us know how the nevr dull works out..I have to polish my winshield frames and dont wat to redo them every month...

I used Mothers Aluminum Polish on Mine and it lasted two seasons before I needed to to re-Polish. Made the aluminum look like chrome. It melted the anodizing and turned it Black. Washed it off and then Buffed it with a 3/8" drill buffing pad. There's pics in my thread somewhere.

Re: 1968 Sportcraft C-Gull work boat project

Thanks 603!

Hmmm...burning it off? I never would have thought about that WOG! I will have to try that on a test piece.

I used Mothers a lot on all the aluminum rims I've had in the past. I think I still have that useless Mother's "power ball" or whatever it's called, lol.
WOG from your windshield polishing post, I've been using Red rubbing compound, liquid polishing compound, and the Novus heavy then light scratch remover on the windshield. On the raw aluminum bow railing mounts I've used Red rubbing compound(turtle wax), Nevr-dull, then liquid polishing compound(turtle wax). It had to be in that order and worked spectacular. I'll break out the Mother's as a final thanks. Two seasons sounds good to me guys!

OUTBOARD MOTOR MOUNTING QUESTION:
I'm mounting a Mercury Bigfoot 4 stroke. Does the outboard mount on the engine HAVE to hang directly on the transom cap or can I bolt the outboard to the transom with a teeny gap between the top of the transom/cap and the outboard? (We're talking fresh paint here)

Also,
1) 3M 5200 only on mounting bolts?
2) Drill oversize holes, epoxy holes shut, redrill holes smaller then slip in bolts sealed in 5200?
3) Permanently epoxy bolts in transom like mounting studs?

Do places like NAPA carry 3M 5200?

Re: 1968 Sportcraft C-Gull work boat project

CORRECTION!!!! My Aluminum was NON Anodized!!!!!! Sorry Guys. The OLD 60's stuff is different than the new stuff.

1) 3M 5200 only on mounting bolts?
4200 Basically same just not Permanent
2) Drill oversize holes, epoxy holes shut, redrill holes smaller then slip in bolts sealed in 5200? Yup Good method and 4200 works too!!!
3) Permanently epoxy bolts in transom like mounting studs? I would NOT recommend this!!!! But your boat... Your Decision.

Do places like NAPA carry 3M 5200 Maybe I dunno!!!! My Lowe's Does!!!!

Oh, Lowe's or Home depot? perfect! So, 4200 over 5200? I'll google the difference here. I just see 5200 being thrown around a lot.

***Did a search, 4200 sounds good. THANK YOU!!!
