1968 Starcraft - Really need expert opinion

Good Day,
I went to take a look today at this boat. It is 16' Starcraft with trailer and a bunch of spare parts (on pictures) owner wants 950 for it.... So question is Should I or should I not? The engine cannot be heard but the owner says it was in the water last week and it ran fine.

Considering that looks like an EARLY to MID sixties motor, and you can't run it I'd either walk or offer way less.

The owner said it is 1968 motor, smae as boat, he said it was a package.
Ok, offer much less then 950..... what would you offer, 500?

And one more question - what are those devices under dashboard? Are they wort anything?

As Capt'n Chris stated, without a water test assume it doesn't run and you may need those spare parts to make it so. If you are asking about those things to the left of the steering wheel and below the key, the black one appears to be a radio of some kind, not sure of the white one.

All those parts are ones the previous owner did not end up using. It appears to be a good old Nassau or Jet. An absolutely timeless boat! I would lowball the seller and do allot more investigation into that OB.... compression, impellar and condition of the wiring overall ....look for weather cracks in the wires.

Best to go over to the OMC forum and ask if that engine is electric shift. If it is, walk away. They were not well designed and no repair parts are available for that lower unit. Or, look at the control. If it has a forward and a reverse button on it, it is electric.

And, BTW: Every engine ever sold was running last time it was out on the water or when the boat was put away.

Without actually firing it up, it is a JUNKER. Period. (unless you have the tools and skill to test it out of the water.)

I would lowball at no more than $450, maybe even 400. The worst they can do is say no. Assume the motor is going to be more trouble than it's worth without an on-water demo. I know it's tempting, but believe me, there are other Starcrafts out there!

I like mine and am glad I bought it, with the intention of making the renovation my hobby...but the more I tore it apart, the more I realized it needed. I'm having fun with it, but if your intention is to get on the water, look for something newer.

I do not know.... I think taht given the motor is probably gone it does not make a difference 950 or 400 - I still need to get a new motor for at least couple grand. So it look slike it is not worth it.

OZ offer him $650 for it the boat itself looks to be in great condition and tincans are worth more even without a motor than a glass boat is with a motor .

Correction, electric shift outboards are not a poor design. When they are working, they work quite well. The problem is it shifts using solenoids in the lower unit. If one of those goes, they are no longer available. That being said, if I acquired one I'd sure as heck run it till it broke. As an added bonus, when they do break, they default to Forward!

I'd offer $500 and go from there.

It is NOT an electric shift if in fact it is a 1968 vintage. The elecrtic shifts came into play in 1972.

Actually, it IS electric shift no external shift handle on the starboard side. Electric shifts came about in the early 1960s. There were two types of electric shift - an electromagnetic clutch system used on models with exhaust that exits the AV plate (40hp twins and earlier V4 designs - 75, 80 & 90hp), and a hydroelectric system used on models with through-hub exhaust, (3-cylinder models and bigger V4s c. 1968 & up.) Only the hydroelectric system defaults to forward. Electromagnetic systems default to neutral. The motor in the pics has the EM system...

Very few tins come up for sale around here(FL) and the hull looks to be in decent enough shape. If the owner says it was used last week why can't he at least slap some muffs on her and start it up. Not a sea trial but at least you would know it's not seized up..

This one I do hjave to agree with if the motor was running last week there shouldnt be a reason it couldnt be fired on Muffs unless it is already below freezing up there . The boat itself does look to be in great condition and is Most likely a Jupiter . I paid $800 for mine and it was in much worse shape when I picked it up . That one looks like its water ready ( if the motor does infact run ) . I would tell the seller if the motor cant be started then you have to figure it doesnt run and therefore the boat is not worth as much since you may need a new motor. The truth is even Tincans loose value without running motors. The good news is rotten fiberglass boats are sold cheap everyday with good motors on them so if you shop around you can find a bad boat with a good motor cheap.
