I don't know, this brown goo at the transom:

Looks like the same seam sealant that SC used, not an owner added sealant...... Won't be the 1st time I've been wrong today, but to me it looks like this:
attachment.php

Not the big puddle of goo, the sealant along the chine seam just above the forward most rib. You can see it dripping out at the top center of the pix.............. Maybe a good scrub down/pressure wash 1st, then decide what's SC's work & what's likely a PO's work.

2 of those 3 screws look like they were run thru rivet holes that still had the rivet's buck tail in them, so what were they for? Damage on the exterior?

I think my Jupiter is 15ft 9in. Not 16ft. Some states don't round the length up, they just drop the inches. So my Jupiter could easily be listed as both a 15ft or a 16ft if it was built before 1973 or was never titled/registered until it was sold by the original owner..

My Jet's are different lengths and neither are actually 15ft like they were listed by SC when they were sold as 15ft runabouts.

Like I said, unless it's really important to you, on principle, pick what YOU think best matches your boat & specs & run w/ it.

When I get a physical inspection on a boat, required in WV to get a title, the cop that comes to take a look doesn't care about ANYTHING other then whether or not there are numbers (possibly a ser# or HIN#) present and that I have paperwork indicating I own a vessel w/ those numbers, usually out of state registration in my name. Once he signs off on the inspection yes or no HIN/ser# form, I fill out all the rest of the info as I see fit. No one at the DMV or state ever sees the boat, or checks to see if how I describe it is accurate.

All i have on the paper is a make and length of the boat. Were a bit laid back here in canada with our boats. At least registration wise. The length on my paper is 4.57 meters and starcrafts the make. Not much more than that on it, i think it was originally blue. I see what you mean regarding the jupiter GA. I have gluvit on the way from kingston and ill be stripping the inside tomorrow, monday hopefully sealing with the gluvit. I'll take pics tomorrow once the inside is all shiny and cleaned up.

Ha! have to love those, rusting away and all. I'm going to truss and 5200 the ones that are with in the rivet hole, and that oddball thats split if i can, ill oversize it, if not, i'll worry about it then lol.

Just wanted to thank people for all the info already. There really is a wicked support group for these classic SC's here. Keep it up!.

4.57M comes out to 14 feet and 11.92125984252 inches - Let's just call it 15 feet. Jups are 16 feet. I guess it's a 15 foot Starcraft.

Re: 1960's Starcraft Something or other

So with today's amazing weather and absolute sunshine, i had a change of heart and decided to flip the boat and strip the outside. After flippingh through Inmotions pictures i fell in love with the polished hull. Unfortunately after today's workings i'm not sure i'll be leaving her naked!

The morning started by waking up and heading to lowes for some lumber and castors. After grabbing my double double and the needed supplies i came home and constructed a simple dolly with some 2x4's and 180 pound rated castors.

With the help of my old man we managed to pull her off the trailer and flip her over and her side. Upon further inspection of the underside I realized how silicone happy the PO was!. Every seam below the water line is thickly covered with it, and he didn't even have enough considerstion to wipe! But here she is down under.

I assembled my assault team, complete with my anti blindness shield i found kicking around the garage.

The stripper i was using was DS super remover. I applied a thick coat as noted in the instructions, waited the 15 recommended mins but within seconds i saw the chemical reaction working its way into that paint.

Re: 1960's Starcraft Something or other

Looking her over after being impatient on the waiting part i peeled the bow section and i noticed a few more concerns then i previously saw. A section on the bow has a good heaping of JB under the ugly white silicone.

After the 15 minutes i pulled out my trusty scrapper and went at it, even though peeling off a a good layer it still left some paint. I noticed the section i did last worked best so decided to try again but work the stripper right away instead of waiting. This time using a brush as well to work the stripper into the paint in a circular motion Worked much much better. I then wiped the brushed over areas with a clean rag and boom. Aluminum.

Seems like the boats been to the south cause it has the florida keys etched into the hull! holy pitting batman! Seems like theres been quite a few repairs over this boats life. Wonderful lol. No better time to learn how to install rivets though.

Heres the PO's genius beauty work again on the transom section of the boat. A couple of new rivets or truss screws should take care of those. After a couple of hours of work i managed to get most of it off the bottom, still need one more pass of a stripper soaked rag to get the residue off. Think it turned out alright!.

Still have more to go but for a couple hours of work i think i did alright. I just hope the weather this week will be as nice as the fishings been. Till later and Fish on!..

carp, nice working stripper. If you've got that Home store IM gets his green super stripper, you might try it. A lot less toxic to work w/ and works great too. So that's 2 great strippers you guys get north of the border that's likely unavailable in the US.

Hull does seem to have had a rough life.

NICE FISH!

Have a good week

Since i have all that silicone to deal with, what would be a good solvent to get the silicone off but wont harm the aluminum? any suggestions?

Silly cone often doesn't stick well to aluminum, so a good pressure washing might get it off. Just don't blast the seams too hard w/ the pressure washer, don't want to make any extra seam work, just get the silly cone off.

I've had good luck w/ a rotary turbo tip on a pressure washer, broke lots of crud loose, I've got access to a 3500psi pressure washer at work, and it didn't damage the aluminum at all, no matter how close I got the turbo tip to the hull. Just don't be careless..

I'll see if i can get my hands on a higher psi pressure washer. I have a small stihl one thats only about 1400 i believe. I just read on a old sailing forum that a abrasive pad soaked with mineral spirits rubs it right off. Going to give it a shot tomorrow.

I wish people would realize sillycone does not belong on a boat. Even the stuff called marine. I glad to see the camo goes next. :D

Used closed end blind rivets to patch the previous stern work on the outer hull, some marine tex should fix that pitting up in a hurry.

Unfortunately the weather wasn't as nice as the fishing haha. The 15-20 mm of rain definitely cleaned the boat though!. Regarding the rivets wouldn't sealed rivets be best for the repair?. I have a hydraulic riveter. Hoping to be able to strip the rest this afternoon and not to worry, pics will follow. Also is it necessary to use the marine tex to cover the pitting or is it just cosmetic?

Covering the pitting helps to prevent further corrosion. Yes closed end blind rivets with a dab of 3m 5200 will work best for the repair.

You have a hydraulic rivet gun? You need to post a pic of that. :joyous:

Re: 1960's Starcraft Something or other

Well as much intention as i had to finish stripping the boat, i was worked like a dog at work and ontop of running out of stripper and not wanting to drive, i stayed home and search kijiji for any good deals. I did go by brafasco (fastener company up north here) and picked up rivets and back up washers. I was wondering if you guys could tell me if im on the right track and if these rivets are what i need. I'm looking forward to using my new toy though :D

I also managed to build a pair of engine stands for my 25 and 10 horsies and was wondering if those two on the back of my boat would be too much weight? its rated for a 50-60 hp.

I hope to have the boat stripped and flipped by friday and be ready for sunday to it fill with water, replace what needs to replace, gluvit, then i can finally start sanding and painting! Till later.

Ideally you want an all aluminum rivet. The ones you have are aluminum and steel.

Shouldn't be too much weight

Air riveter, right?

Rivets look to be right, might need a backup washer or 2, but not every rivet needs one. Might use a few as 'just in case' backers, but generally shouldn't need them.

Re: 1960's Starcraft Something or other

Alum/steel blind rivets is what the SC factory used on my Chief. They lost mandrels which turned into corroded spots and rust so be sure to keep track of those. As soon as the mandrel hole fills with water they will begin rusting out. I know why they use the alum/steel, for the tight grip they have and less cost. Personally I would only use solid alum rivets but if you dab each mandrel hole with some 5200 to seal out water then your golden. There was no way I was going to do that on the estimated 500 to 600 blind rivets I will be popping in with my pneumatic rivet gun.

BTW do you hate stripping paint yet?
